Five Secret Tips of Having a Healthy Skin

Your skin is the most delicate part of your body. If properly maintained and taken care of, it provides an essential protective means against diseases or harsh weather, but if your skin is weak or damaged, you will become vulnerable.

You also need to know how to treat your skin. Be mindful of the foods you eat, the type of skincare creams you use and also not getting much sleep or always stressing yourself can have an impact on your skin and health. Below are the five secret tips of having a healthy skin;

1. Protect your skin from the sun

Consistently staying in the sun can cause severe damage to your skin. According to some research, Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer, but UV light from tanning beds is quite harmful too. Sun exposure can also cause premature aging of the skin. For example, facial wrinkles and folds. The UV light from the sun destroys the fibers in the skin, which causes the skin to sag, and stretch, hence, it loses the ability to go back into place after stretching.

To avoid skin damages of the sun, use sunscreen, hats, long sleeves, and other sun protection are crucial, especially for people with lighter skin. You can also use skin moisturizers. They help to keep the skin moist by increasing the moisture level of your skin cells and preventing them from dying out when you are in the sun.

2. Make sure to exfoliate

Firstly, what do we mean by exfoliation? Exfoliation is a skincare technique that involves the use of exfoliating tools to remove dead cells from the top layer of the skin. By removing these dead skin cells, your skin will have a bright complexion and also helps your skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin, enabling them to work better.

It may sound like a tedious job because you wash your face every day after all. However, if your skin is sensitive, you can exfoliate your face once or twice a week, and if you have oily skin, you can exfoliate up to five times a week. Normal to combination skin may require using the process for a period of three times a week.

3. Minding the type of food you eat

The foods you eat can either have a negative or positive impact on your skin's health. According to research, diets high in saturated fats, including meat, butter, and full-fat dairy, as well as soft drinks, cakes, pastries and potatoes(called "high-glycemic foods"), increases the likelihood of skin wrinkling. To ensure healthy and smooth skin, eat a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, and aim for at least five portions a day.

Beta-carotene in vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins and Lutein in kale, papayas, and spinach are potent antioxidants which help in the development of skin cells and healthy skin tone.

4. Use the right shaving equipment

Shaving makes your skin smoother and calm. It helps to remove dead layers of skin and ingrown hairs. And by doing so, it gives your skin a more youthful appearance. However, using the right shaving equipment would ensure that your skin has the correct care.

For example, multi-blade razors provide a “microdermabrasion, " removing dead skin layers but it is not proper for African American men and other men with curly hair to use these type of blades because they cause painful razor bumps from ingrown hairs. Using an electric blade or a single blade would be a better option for men with curly skin hair. Also, apply moisturizers or alcohol- free aftershave since the alcohol-heavy varieties dry out the skin severely.

5. Gently wash your face using a mild soap and cleanser

Washing your face every morning is hygienic, but you need to be mindful with the kind of soaps and cleansers you use. For sensitive skin, you can use fragrance- free or dye-free products. And while you are washing your face, try to keep it simple and gentle with the cleansers.

When you want to wash your body, avoid taking hot showers and using harsh soaps because this makes your skin dry and when your skin is dry, you will look wrinkled and much older.
