What do I need to read? Each quarter, students are required to read two nonfiction books, two fiction chapter books, and one assigned genre book on their own for independent reading. In order for the book to count towards their A.R. goal, students must receive at least a 70% on the A.R. test.
How will I receive a grade? Students will receive a grade for these A.R. tests each quarter.
What are bonus books? Once students complete their required books for the quarter, any additional books read will be bonus books. Bonus books will rotate between nonfiction and fiction/nonfiction chapter books. This prevents students from only reading shorter nonfiction books.
If a student reads a chapter book that is worth 5 or less points, it will count as one bonus book. If the book has between 6-10 points, it will be worth two bonus books. 11-15 points would be equivalent to three bonus books and so on. This encourages students to select larger books without feeling a time crunch to read them.
There will be small rewards for reaching certain milestones for bonus books. When a student reaches 10, 25, 40, and 50 bonus books, a reward will be earned. If a student reaches 50 books, they will be included in the "50 Book Club." Members of the "50 Book Club" will have a special prize at the end of the year in May.
