Community and connection is what drives a union, and what drives us to pursue a profession like teaching. We want to make a difference in our communities both big and small. Whether it's making your classroom and school a place where students feel safe or you're running a massive fundraiser, community is a core pillar to what makes our job great.
Teaching is not a profession separated from politics. Every day, the future of our careers and our students is placed in the hands of politicians who decide how much money we get, what kind of standards should be put in place, and what our students learn. Being active in politics as a teacher means to stand up for what we think is best for our students, and to be a voice that bridges politics and practice.
Teaching our students means teaching ALL students, no matter their race, religion, gender, sexuality, national origin, ability, or other things that make them "different". In order to teach to our wide variety of students, we have to work both for them and for a socially just curriculum.
