Love, the rose, is on the way...
Rev. Emelia Attridge
Inch by inch, row by row,
gonna make this garden grow.
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
and a piece of fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row,
Someone bless the seeds I sow.
Someone warm them from below,
’til the rain comes tumbling down.
"Garden Song" by John Denver
There's an agricultural process called "harrowing," which is when the soil is disturbed and broken up to help to prepare the soil for planting.
The word "harrowing" is like the word "apocalypse:" two words that sound like they mean something horrible, but their meanings reveal potential. "Apocalypse" means an "unveiling." Often we need an "unveiling" or to disturb the soil in order to see the truth. Advent is a season of harrowing, preparing, and unveiling, which invites us to reveal the ways we (individually or collectively and culturally) may be contributing to oppression in our world. It's not easy work, but necessary.
Divine Gardener,
Sow the seeds of change in our hearts and in our world this Advent.
May we tend the soil, and prepare for ways to nurture the seeds you are planting in the year to come,
that one day, all may be freed from gloom and darkness.
Amen.
