About the Session
Clouds provides vast, flexible infrastructure that can be used for HPC, and increasingly major cloud providers are deploying hardware and software that are optimized for HPC applications and workloads–leading to cloud HPC usage growing even faster than on-prem HPC usage. However, it is important to understand how cloud infrastructure differs from on-prem systems, and how to choose the most effective hardware and configure the most effective software environment to achieve maximum efficiency when running HPC applications and workloads. In this session, HPC experts and Google product managers John Fonner and Adnan Khaleel will cover essential strategies and best practices for understanding and improving the performance and scalability of HPC applications in clouds and for optimizing the throughput and/or cost efficiency of HPC workloads using Google Cloud as an example.
Join us to learn how to select the right infrastructure, scale resources intelligently, and implement effective cost controls. You will leave with practical techniques to run your computations more efficiently, accelerate your time-to-solution, and maximize the value of Google Cloud for your research and engineering goals.
Speakers
John Fonner
Senior Product Manager, Google Cloud
As a member of the High Performance Computing group at Google, John Fonner is dedicated to making Google's planet-scale computing infrastructure the premier platform for public sector research. With nearly two decades of experience in scientific high-performance computing and a background in Biomedical Engineering, John has a proven track record of leading and contributing to large-scale cyberinfrastructure projects that broaden the reach of scientific resources and accelerate the pace of discovery. Prior to joining Google, John was the Director of Special Projects at the Texas Advanced Computing Center, where he led and contributed to numerous research and cyberinfrastructure projects funded by the NSF, NIH, DARPA, and others.
Adnan Khaleel
Outbound Product Manager, Google Cloud
Adnan Khaleel is driven by a single goal: making powerful technology accessible to a broader range of users. He works closely with engineering teams to translate customer needs into product strategy, ensuring that tools are intuitive and easy to consume. This passion has been a constant throughout his more than 20-year career at innovators like Intel, Dell, and Cray. He has always focused on creating new growth engines—from leading Dell’s HPC democratization strategy to pioneering Cray's entry into the AI and data analytics space.
Today at Google, his core mission is to scale these solutions globally by creating effective go-to-market strategies. While fostering a vibrant partner ecosystem is one important way he achieves this, his main focus is on empowering users directly. He is always happy to connect with anyone passionate about solving big problems in this space.
