Frequently Asked Questions
General
Q: What is Advanced Port Scanner?
A: Advanced Port Scanner is a TCP port checker for developers, IT professionals, homelab users, and anyone who needs to see which ports are open or closed on a host. Enter a hostname or IP address, choose a port range or a custom list, and review live results — including service names, response time, and a short server banner when one is available.
Q: What platforms does the app support?
A: The app runs on iOS and Android.
Q: What kind of scan does the app perform?
A: It performs a TCP connect scan. It does not scan UDP, ping devices, map your Wi‑Fi for other people’s phones, or look for security vulnerabilities.
Q: Do I need special permissions?
A: The app needs network access to connect to the host and ports you enter. Use it only on devices and networks you own or have permission to test.
Scanning
Q: How do I run a scan?
A: Enter a host, domain, or IP address. Choose Range (start and end port) or List (for example 22,80,443,8000-8100). Tap Start Scan. Results appear as each port is checked.
Q: What can I enter in the host field?
A: A hostname (for example nas.local), a domain (for example example.com), or an IP address. You can also paste a URL; the app will use the host part.
Q: What is the difference between Range and List?
A: Range checks every TCP port from the start number to the end number (for example 1 to 1024). List checks only the ports you type, including mixed values such as 22,80,443,8000-8010.
Q: Which ports can I scan?
A: TCP ports from 1 to 65535.
Q: Why does a large scan show a warning?
A: Checking thousands of ports can take several minutes. The app asks you to confirm before starting a very large scan so you can cancel if that was not what you intended.
Q: Can I stop a scan?
A: Yes. Tap Stop while a scan is running. Ports already checked stay in the results list.
Q: Why does a port show as closed?
A: The host refused the connection, did not answer in time, or a firewall dropped the attempt. Timeouts are shown as Closed in the results list. This is normal for unused ports and for hosts that filter traffic.
Q: Why are some well-known services labeled (SSH, HTTP, HTTPS) and others are not?
A: The app labels common services on well-known ports (typically 1–1024). Higher ports may still appear in the list with status, latency, and a banner when one is available.
Q: What is the banner or extra line under an open port?
A: For some open ports, especially common web ports, the app may read a short server banner or HTTP Server header (for example nginx or OpenSSH). This is a hint about what answered, not a full security audit.
Q: What does the time in milliseconds mean?
A: That is how long the TCP connection took for an open port. Slower times can mean a busy service, a distant host, or a constrained network.
Results
Q: How do I see only open ports?
A: Use the filters above the results: All, Open, or Closed.
Q: How do I copy a port number?
A: Tap a result row. The port number is copied to the clipboard.
Q: How do I share results?
A: After a scan finishes, tap the share icon on the Results card to send a text summary of open ports.
Q: How do I clear results?
A: Tap the delete icon on the Results card when a scan is not running.
Q: Why does host lookup fail?
A: Check the spelling of the hostname, your internet or Wi‑Fi connection, and DNS. If you are scanning a local device, confirm you are on the same network and that the device is on.
Troubleshooting
Q: The scan is slow.
A: Closed and filtered ports wait for a timeout. Large ranges (for example 1–65535) take much longer than a short list of common ports. Use List for a faster check of services you care about.
Q: I cannot reach a host that I know is online.
A: Confirm the host or IP, try without a VPN, and check that your network allows outbound TCP to that address. Guest Wi‑Fi, corporate firewalls, and carrier networks often block scans.
Q: Ads are covering the screen or failed to load.
A: Ads need a network connection. If an ad fails, the rest of the app should still work. Restart the app if the layout looks wrong.
Q: Can I scan someone else’s server or the public internet?
A: Only scan systems you own or have permission to test. Unauthorized port scanning may violate laws and network policies.
