We are the teacher shortage.
We sustain adult education workers by advocating for transparency and teacher voice in programmatic decisions and policies.
We highlight the human cost of undervaluing adult education by documenting teacher experiences.
We organize adult education workers to build their individual and collective power.
A little history
Some action-focused teachers and administrators at Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) in Chicago started talking about wage transparency among the teachers at their organization.
They shared the findings with the staff but wanted to get the message out to a wider audience. Those original leaders are still instrumental in sustaining the group today.
In Summer 2022, Rachel Celeste (then, Greenwood) reached out to Literacy Works to see if they would like to take the project to their network. The Wage Transparency Project was started and that fall we wrote our first report.
In March 2023, we changed the name to Adult Ed WAVE, developed a mission statement, and hit the ground running.
