Exploring Majors & My Educational Plan
My declared major is Medical Imaging Technology BS, and right now I am on the pre-medical imaging track going through the process of an associate’s degree in radiography. I chose this major over a year ago, and I am confident in my decision. I need to maintain a high GPA in my first year of college and have documentation of clinical observation in the radiography department from two hospitals to be highly considered for admission of the x-ray program. In order to be successful in this career, I need to be a critical thinker, excel in medical and science courses, have a high attention to detail, and have communication skills. Knowing how to manage my time through the intense, rigorous program will be essential to keeping up and maintaining at least a B- (below is considered failing).
I believe this degree is the best fit for me because I have a high number of the qualities needed to be successful, and I am interested and motivated by the sciences of radiography. I would love to pursue higher education through the medical imaging program at IU School of Medicine. Currently, I am interested in MRI, CT, or mammography, but I am not set on any of my options yet. My education pathway throughout my four years of college can be thoroughly explained in the page named, "Future Career," under "Career Plan - My Steps for Becoming a Medical Imaging Technologist."
Enhancing My Experience
The first activity I began participating in was a service learning/volunteer program through Riley Hospital for Children. Through this volunteer program, I do fun activities with several children on two floors, restock storage closets' toys, clean and sanitize play rooms, and more. Going into this, I wanted to give kids in the hospital a fun experience and kind of distract them from any illness they may have, as it is a hard thing for tiny humans to go through. This was especially important to me for those reasons, and I wanted to gain more experience handling a variety of patients in the hospital setting. Because of this experience, I am leaning toward pediatric radiography! For more information about this experience, head to the Service Learning tab under "Experiences."
A future activity that I would like the participate in would be a national honor society, like Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD). One of the things I hope to do in ALD is participate in an annual even with a nonprofit organization. This can include St. Jude Children's Hospital or Animal Care and Control. Through this type of community service and other leadership workshops, I hope to gain more knowledge about the organizations, serve my community well, and improve my leadership skills.
