I am a senior economist in the Financial Research Department of the Central Bank of Chile. My research focuses on International Macroeconomics, Macrofinance and Financial Institutions. I also teach graduate and undergraduate courses at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (International Macroeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics) and the Universidad de Chile (Financial Derivatives).
Prior to my graduate studies, I worked as a fixed income trader, first in a pension fund and then in an international commercial bank (HSBC Uruguay). Both the pension fund's portfolio and the bank's asset and trading books were mainly focused on local and global Uruguayan government bonds, US Treasuries and Multilaterals debt. I also participated in several global sovereign debt issues and debt management operations (such as exchanges and buybacks) as a local representative of the NY based Capital Markets team.
I received my Ph.D. in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile under the supervision of David Kohn (PUC), Rodrigo Harrison (UAI), Caio Machado (PUC) and Guillermo Ordoñez (UPenn). My dissertation, "Essays in Sovereign Debt and Default", focuses on investor and sovereign decisions during the restructuring process of defaulted debt and after restructuring to regain access to the capital market.
In autumn 2019, I visited the University of Notre Dame (visiting research programme at the Kellogg Institute of International Studies), where I had the opportunity to work with Illenin Kondo, Cesar Sosa Padilla and Zachary Stangebye.
I obtained my BA in Economics at Universidad de la República in Uruguay. I also hold a MSc in Economics from Universidad de Montevideo, and MScs in Economics and in Applied Macroeconomics from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
