If you are curious, here's more about me:
I am a teacher today but I am also a former professional broadcaster. I have taught high school students, college students, and university students. I have worked as an actress, emcee, host, television producer, breaking news reporter, photojournalist, writer, editor, and all-around media nerd. I love teaching the craft of audio and visual storytelling. I am also a former RTV kid who wrote for the campus paper. I am an SJDC graduate who then went on to pursue more education at CSU Stanislaus and then continued with a Master's.
I never intended to be a life-long student. After high school, I grew up quickly because I got married young and had 4 sons in 5 years. I wanted to be a better human for those boys so I went to school in the hope to provide them with a better life. My husband and I have been together for 22 years now. I have two sons that attend Delta so I do my best to treat every student like I want my kids' teachers to invest in them. My oldest son is a San Joaquin Delta College graduate. My youngest son is in high school but will also be a Mustang someday. My husband is a graduate of Delta College's fantastic Nursing program. My mother is a local educator who started her education at SJDC after emigrating to the United States. I tell you all of this to let you know that Delta College is not just a place I work at, it's a place that has literally changed the trajectory of my family's life. My heart is here at SJDC. I am truly honored to get to work at what I believe to be the most important place in Stockton.
Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I believe that because it is my lived experience. My education has afforded me so many amazing opportunities. I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica, and remember learning English as a kid. I grew up in South Stockton and I deeply believe in the power of community college to transform our community. I believe that we all hold the power to be/change/reinvent who we are whenever we want. "It's never too late to be what you might have been," wrote George Eliot (whose real name was Mary Ann Evans, look her up to learn about a 19th-century boss) and time passes whether we are in the pursuit of our goals or not, so why not pursue them!?
I love my family, my work, travel and I value building relationships with those around me. I love fostering a sense of community, advocating for mental health awareness, and I see myself as a servant leader.
Most importantly, I believe that everyone can learn and everyone has something to teach. I look forward to getting to know you in the classroom. I can promise you that I will root for you. If you enter my classroom, I will do all that I can to help you succeed.
Random fact: I also love lipstick and I have been playing dress-up to go to school since I was a child. This was my favorite dress that I still remember trying on at the pulga in 1980 something.
