On Reflection

'Breathe'

This body of work from 1987/88 dealt with my fascination with the recurring divided light form shapes that moved around and interacted with things over time within the bedroom of the house in which I was then living.

Initially I was content to just photograph the light forms but later felt a need to interact with and intervene in them myself in almost a ritualistic way.

Working with the old notion of images as “mirrors” as opposed to “windows” I wanted to try to reflect an emotional sparsity and static coldness contrasted with the warmth and fluidity of the changing light forms which ritually visited what was itself quite an sparse and frugal room. I also wanted to reflect feelings of entrapment and containment whether physical or emotional.

The exhibition comprised a sequence of 35 images. The original images were made on Kodak Kodachrome 64 transparency film and then, to give the richness that I needed, printed on Cibachrome.
