Paper Reflection
Reflection on "Lee, I., Ali, S., Zhang, H., DiPaola, D., & Breazeal, C. (2021, March). Developing Middle School Students’ AI Literacy. In Proceedings of the 52nd ACM technical symposium on computer science education (pp. 191-197)."
I found the overall paper to be an interesting read, and will most likely be something I look back on to potentially pull ideas from. There were some mentioned points in the paper regarding teaching ethics around AI and showed great concern towards the potential bias that could result from neglecting minority groups. I think it's very interesting to hear that there was much discussion had on regarding the ethics of AI, since often when it comes to new technology, ethics are the last thing people usually think about. I found it a bit suprising that they tackled a subject like biases in AI and discussed it, and originally I never really thought much about what potential biases AI algorithims could have. But it seems that throughout this workshop, they learned that were biases. Although I wish there was more of an explanation regarding their concerns over this topic in this paper. For example, they would often say that there could be potential discrimination, but unless I missed something, never explicitly said regarding in what technolgy AI was used in. There could be discrimination used in a selection process of applicants that could use some form of AI system, a reflection on that would have been interesting to read upon. I also would have liked to read something regarding the discussion of the ethical use of AI in art. They mentioned it as a positive example of AI technology, but I believe there could be a discussion regarding that as a negative use of it. Overall the overview of the workshop was intriguing.
Reflection on Long, D., & Magerko, B. (2020, April). What is AI literacy? Competencies and design considerations. In Proceedings of the 2020 CHI conference on human factors in computing systems (pp. 1-16)
I found this read to be far more compelling and had a lot more information in regards to what I wanted from the last paper. For example, on the topic of ethics, the portion of How Should AI Be Used?, this goes over a list of ethical concerns regarding the technology which I found very interesting to go over. It seems like when regarding ethics of Artifical intelligence, there is still a lot of grey area in terms of the law, and until there is something established that can tackle some of the concerns listed, those will pose a continous ethical dilema when developing things with AI. I also found the How Do People Percieve AI? to be just as compelling, with the concept of a black-box technology. I had never reflected upon the concept, but since AI inner functions are basically an opaque technology that can obscure how it works, it can cause a lot of unforseen problems, especially when it is used on a popular platform. If I recall correctly, there had already been legal issues regarding how the Youtube algorithim works and it's accountability with what it recommends, and I believe that is a result of this black-box type of technology. In the paper, there was also a topic discussed earlier regarding the teaching of ML, and their lack of research of how to do so to an audience that doesn't have a background in computer science. I found this useful in a sense, because it showcases the experts aproach to attempting to teach a complex topic, and extrapolating from their aproaches could help me in developing my own project. Overall, this paper has a lot of info, and will most likely go back to reflect upon further later on.
ChatGPT Prompt
Asking ChatGPT for some ideas to engage children in learning about AI, it gave me about 7 quite bland responses, however asking it to delve into the first topic it sent, it gave me this prompt which I found interesting.
There are already text based AI story telling websites that work like this, but I wonder if it's possible to tailor a story to children and include ai generated pictures with that, and with it could teach children more about AI in some way. It could be an interesting concept to delve into later. Below is the entire prompt that it generated originally.
