The ActionScript programming language allows the development of interactive animations, video games, web applications, desktop applications, and mobile applications. Programmers can implement Flash software using an IDE such as Adobe Animate, Adobe Flash Builder, Adobe Director, FlashDevelop, and Powerflasher FDT. Adobe AIR enables full-featured desktop and mobile applications to be developed with Flash and published for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch.

Developers could create rich internet applications and browser plugin-based applets in ActionScript 3.0 programming language with IDEs, including Adobe Flash Builder, FlashDevelop and Powerflasher FDT. Flex applications were typically built using Flex frameworks such as PureMVC.[22]

The Flash 4 Linux project was an initiative to develop an open source Linux application as an alternative to Adobe Animate. Development plans included authoring capacity for 2D animation, and tweening, as well as outputting SWF file formats. F4L evolved into an editor that was capable of authoring 2D animation and publishing of SWF files. Flash 4 Linux was renamed UIRA. UIRA intended to combine the resources and knowledge of the F4L project and the Qflash project, both of which were Open Source applications that aimed to provide an alternative to the proprietary Adobe Flash.

In the same year that Shumway was abandoned, work began on Ruffle, a flash emulator written in Rust. It also runs in web browsers, by compiling down to WebAssembly and using HTML5 Canvas.[141] In 2020, the Internet Archive added support for emulating SWF by adding Ruffle to its emulation scheme.[142] As of March 2023, Ruffle states that it supports 95% of the AS1/2 language and 73% of the AS1/2 APIs, but does not correctly run most AS3 (AVM2) applications.[citation needed]

Like the HTTP cookie, a flash cookie (also known as a "Local Shared Object") can be used to save application data. Flash cookies are not shared across domains. An August 2009 study by the Ashkan Soltani and a team of researchers at UC Berkeley found that 50% of websites using Flash were also employing flash cookies, yet privacy policies rarely disclosed them, and user controls for privacy preferences were lacking.[209] Most browsers' cache and history suppress or delete functions did not affect Flash Player's writing Local Shared Objects to its own cache in version 10.2 and earlier, at which point the user community was much less aware of the existence and function of Flash cookies than HTTP cookies.[210] Thus, users with those versions, having deleted HTTP cookies and purged browser history files and caches, may believe that they have purged all tracking data from their computers when in fact Flash browsing history remains. Adobe's own Flash Website Storage Settings panel, a submenu of Adobe's Flash Settings Manager web application, and other editors and toolkits can manage settings for and delete Flash Local Shared Objects.[211]

I learning UDK (Unreal Development kit) ; becuase i want to use unreal engine but my cumputer is weak so I had to use UDK, Then I realized that in order to create menus in the game I need to use Adobe Flash in order to use Scaleform, and I only found adobe flash professional

This is a pretty huge problem for me. I work with some big brands that have a looooot of legacy flash files. Going back to CS6 for sure. Can't imagine it's really necessary to remove support for this considering there's still so much of it floating around, and it's only one version back.

Thank you kang0372! While I am moving away from flash for sites because the lack of support. I still need to update the few I have and I personally never jumped on the AS3 wheel as it seemed to take 3x the time to make a simple button or animation.

Hi I have been watching awesome animations on youtube and I was like, I am so going to do that. So then I watched how to vids and found out about Macromedia flash professional 8 which is what a lot of people are using, for free. Now I know that Adobe wold never give something as good as this for free but couldn't find anywhere to buy it and I didn't want to get any malware, spyware, and or virus can someone please help me. By the way I do not have the money to get CS6 or any thing like that.

yes, I understand that. I used to want to use Opentoonz as my main software, but I chickened out of the program after just a few days of trying to learn the UI of the program and turned to Macromedia flash. I haven't looked back since. And I respectfully disagree with your statements of "Other freeware alternatives are more powerful" These ancient versions may not be the most modern, but still can be considered good even in this day and age. Another thing is that this version of flash is very beginner-friendly, and is better for a younger audience. one last thing, what were you trying to imply here then if you weren't trying to say that you don't understand why younger animators use flash

Sorry for necro, but Macromedia flash mx 2004 IS legally free. It's basically the same, except it's an older version by 2 years. You can download it from some random website, I used oldversion.com, and the serial code to activate is on Adobe's website itself. -productkb/policy-pricing/macromedia-legacy-activation-error.html Is the link for the serial code (scroll down in that link to find it).

actually, there was an adobe cs2 suite that included flash cs2. and for a while, adobe even offered a version of cs2 that needed no server-activation for licensed users that many interpreted as adobe offering the cs2 suite for free for everyone (probably because no license/serial no. check was done prior to download).

I have just recently switched from an ultrabook to a macbook pro and I'm having some problems since this is the first time I have owned a mac. I have downloaded the latest version of Adobe Flash player but whenever I use safari and try to watch a video on youtube or any other website it tells me that I need to download the latest version of flash player. This only happens when I use safari, it works just fine on chrome. I have restarted my computer several times but that doesn't do anything. I have installed and uninstalled flash player several times but that doesn't do anything also. I have checked if the flash player plug-in is on my internet plug-ins folder and it is and the internet plug ins are not blocked on my safari preferences. This isn't the frst time that this has hapenned to me, when I first downloaded flah player I had the same problem but unfortunately I forgot how I fixed the problem. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, I'm getting really annoyed by this since I never had this kind problem with my old ultrabook. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1st) Click on the apple at the top left corner of your screen. Fourth option down, system preferences click this. Once system preferences opens up adobe flashplayer should be listed on the very bottom row, click this. Once adobe preferences are open make sure you are on the storage tab (listed accross the top), make sure "allow site to save information on this computer" is bulleted. Next click on the "local storage settings by site...". Once you click that, check to see if youtube.com is listed in the box. If not then click the + symbol at the bottom left. Manually enter www.youtube.com. Close out of everything.

Firefox was great until new adobe flash update,it works fine in IE8, but I do prefer FF browser...now it tells me to upload plugins, so when I try to comply I am offered Version 10.3 so I go on with that until its installing nearly 50% & then FFox realises that a newer version (namely Flashplayer 11) is already on my laptop & then it stops......leaving me completely unable to use FFox at all???Why is FFox only offering me the page with this wrong version(10.3) ???? Can we get FFox to correct this ?? Thanking you, yours sincerely...liamo777

Hello SafeBrowser........ Well FFox still fails to install adobe flash 11 in MSG Games when instructed to download this plugin & every attempt to download 11 from other sites ended in being offered the wrong version namely 10.3 as I said before. So I stayed at it and sorted it out. I wiped everything to do with Version 11 and reinstalled Version 10.3 .......& I like computers and if I know a fix I'll post it, all this I look at as learning something new everyday but it very time consuming.
