Hi there! I was wondering if someone could tell me which is better for animation- After Effects or Flash? The pros and cons for each, or something along thoes lines. I've looked at other threads, but they were quite dated (or just useless, listing no reasons). If it helps to know, I won't be doing web animation, and I'm already quite familiar with After Effects in the motion graphics and visual effects areas. I'm also wondering which is used more commonly in the industry, and which would benifit me more in future (job opprotunities, ecetera). Thank you in advanced.

Today I contacted adobe billing with my gripes about After Effects performance vs subscription costs. I basically told tem how long I have been using the software and that I am very dissatisfied with the performance of recent years, how much additional time things are taking, etc - and was given a recent promotional discount.

Basically halving my subscription.

I suggest you all do the same.

If enough of us do this, well, perhaps speaking with our wallets is a better idea than trying to flog a dead horse here in the forums.

Recently, i was moving a Solid with a text... and suddendly all the interface started to lag and slowed down everything! I don't understand... my old macbook pro from 2012 with AE work so much better than this new s**ty version. I hope some company does an Ae application to compete with adobe, because i have seen this problem in the forum for a long time and adobe just won't do nothing. I really feel scammed with all the money i'm putting on their wallet.

Please, listen to the community, repair and put some efford to solve this trashy program.

PS: Searching for an alternative, i found "Project Avalanche" wich is based in Unreal Engine... so... it's just a matter of time to transfer this laggy workflow to a another much better one.

I'm disappointd to say I'm slightly relieved that it's not just me who's experiencing these same issues.

I just bought this new Macbook pro laptop about 4/5 months ago, after effects was running fine at first, then things started to slow down. I did a little research and a lot of the same thing popped up, reccomending I delete my unused cache files to free space and declutter the software. 

I did this, and if anything, it got worse...

Unfortunetely I work as a freelance vido editor and I primarily spend a lot of my time animating custom infographics for high paying clients. 

It has been incredibly frustrating as of late, things are taking twice as long as they should, i run into a thousand problems a day with the software, just last night I was exporting a 15 second animation that would of taken (at most) 10 minutes, but it took me 35 minutes to export... (albiet I was rendering and exporting in 4k, but i still don't believe a fresh high quality laptop should take 35 minutes to export a 15 second animation...)

My business has slowed, I fear I might lose some of my clients, as I've had to push back a lot of my due dates because of how long things are taking to render.

Today i'm working on a 1080p clip and it's also taking twice as long to export and render... this is impossible

But I found a fix! I reverted to 2020 and now everything is working perfectly again. It's the exact same old after effects experience: slow, laggy, no real-time playback, except its 100 times better because it doesnt crash my entire system after 2 minutes of use.

Thanks Kathygraphy for your suggestion to turn off "Cache frames when idle". However, this problem goes deeper because even after turning the setting off, and just RAM preview-ing a simple 1080p video with zero effects added, the memory usage jumps to a staggering 45 GB.

Just an update. Adobe 2023 still poses the same issue. It reaches a staggering 52 GB of RAM usage for me after around 20mins of usage and simple RAM previews. Its nothing to do with the composition exceeding the workstation capability.

Thanks for this! I think we found the cause, but not quite the solution. Not for me, anyway. I also have a two-monitor set up, with one connected via USB and DisplayLink drivers. If I disconnect the USB monitor, After Effects does load up fine. However the Composition window doesn't update after rendering the frame it was on when I last saved. It seems to render that one frame, then no changes to the comp affect the preview, so AE loads but is still unusable.

I believe the issue with still related to using a DisplayLink-driven harcware to connect an extra monitor. If I load Windows without the monitor connected, so the driver never gets loaded, After Effects works okay. Disconnecting or disabling the monitor after Windows has loaded does not. Rebooting each time I want to use After Effects isn't ideal; my productivity in other apps (including the rest of the CC suite) is greatly improved with multiple screens.

Is there any way to force After Effects to use the discrete NVIDIA graphics card, and/or ignore the DisplayLink hardware?

I am also experiencing this problem. I am using a docking station (DisplayLink Plugable UD-3900) with 2 monitors and after effects crashes (on startup) only when the docking station is connected to my PC. All my GPU drivers are updated.

Same. I'm using a Targus USB-C universal docking station with an HP Z-book laptop. I went around in circles for weeks with adobe and other tech support, and we found that the docking station was causing After Effects to crash on startup. Won't run at all. The only way I can get AE to run on my laptop is to unplug it from the docking station.

All i did was go to Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware and i disconnected the headphones i was using, after it it was fine and running and i've connected them again and it's all going smooth : ). THIS IS CORRECT

It actually worked... Who would have thought to search for the problem there? 

Adobe should really work on bugs like this.. Small problems like these happened to me in almost every adobe app and it just kills your workflow.....

We all have this problem. Emty Disc Cache or disabling it doenst keep After effects from saving files to the disc that are piling up. My disc was sussdbely full and when i used a tgird party app clean my mac i found this folder. I gave to manually keep deleting this every week. I dont think this is a good thing for solid stat drives also.

A good solution may be : "Is disk space low when after effects is being opened?" if yes - "has the user ever emptied their cache before?" if no a dialogue box that says : "Hey, if you're running low on space try emptying your cache and decreasing the size of it. Click here to learn more. (do not show again box is checked)"

Second part of the issue : If like I did you set a limit of 45gb of caches at first, after as you reduce the size to 35 gb like it's set up for the moment on my computer, it won't ... and that's it's unbelievable ... reduce the size of the pre-existing caches !!!!! that's it's ashamed for a second times !!!!

make it a habit to first save when you start making a project, and work with auto save (easy for me to say - 12 years with the software and still sometimes I only remember to save it for the first time only after an hour or so)

I am also having a similar problem I keep trying to save an AE project I worked on for 10 hours but when I try to save it says After effects warning error with the file. And auto-save stopped saving my work so I don't want to quit AE and have all my work deleted is there another way to save or a solution not involving quitting AE?

Most software will automatically save it as untitled project. why cant after effect be the same . adobe need to sit up .. a similar thing happen to me. I have started using Davnci resolve trust me guyz it rocks

This has been bugging the hell out of me for more than half a year. And your suggestion fixed it.

After removing the "long dead project" folder entry from the "Most Recently Used Files" section, AE will default back to that location one last time, and after that will use the most recent location.

And, Hello Adobe, I appreciate your work, but your work with customer relations needs improvement. I'm concerned that you've developed a culture of "let god sort them out" when it comes to bugs you introduce in new versions. This clearly is an issue. The MRU bug, and your culture.

Thats pretty much it, all updates installed and app just closes, no pop up from windows or adobe, it just disappears. Working on a project its being a serious challenge, any click seems to be a potential trigger for this situation (drag and drop, adding effects, etc.). Has anyone encounter such a situation? is there something im not seeing?

I am having the same issue. After Effects just seems to close without warning after about 10-15 minutes of start-up. I went to check out the logs to see if it was there but there is no log to be seen. I was wondering if there was a fix to this?
