The 2024-25 will see the first instance of the Elementary (Grade 5) and Intermediate (Grade 8) Science Assessments. The Assessments also come with Required Investigations that you can access through the test portal.

With each assessment, there is a set of four investigations that need to be completed before the assessment. 15% of the computer-based assessments themselves will draw knowledge from the performance expectations explored in these investigations.Â
Linked to the right is how to access the investigations, the list of request materials, and frequently asked questions in regard to executing and grading the investigations.
Linked below and to the right is a document that shares how to repurpose your Discovery Education kit for the Required Investigations. You'll find materials that you'll need to purchase in red (with recommended vendors), materials not in the kits that are generally available around schools, and other guidance on where to locate each item.
Below are printable copies of the Practice Test that you can use with your students. A computer-based version of the test is available online.
One of the first things that you can do in your classroom is align your assessment structure with the Performance Level Descriptions below. They serve as a great way to assess students on warm ups, exit tickets, class responses, and other activities that you have yet to prescribe a scoring criteria to.
Below is a recommended visual timeline for implementing the NYS Elementary (3-5) and Intermediate (6-8) Science Tests. Below each visual timeline, you'll find a checklist format that your school site can make a copy of (File in the Top Left, Make a Copy) as well as a visual timeline for partial implementation
Schools opting to pursue the NYS Biology or Earth & Space Science Regents can still opt to do so. Please see the details on the right in order to waive the Intermediate (8th Grade) assessment. The Regents assessments have their own required investigations and performance level descriptors that you can find on the right.
For schools who are interested in learning more about how to explore topics on the NYS Biology or Earth & Space Science Regents, consult the New Visions / UC Boulder iHub / OpenSciEd Biology curriculums below.
Summer assignments as well as a parent letter have also been developed in order to communicate and prepare for the transition.
