Southern Hacks 2020 was one of the coolest events I ever had the privilege of being involved in. I was involved and responsible for several parts of the event, and am very proud of how it turned out.
Southern Hacks was Georgia Southerns FIRST Hackathon! We managed to start the event in partnership with WIT and ran a successful Hackathon for students of not just Georgia Southern, but several nearby institutions as well. Nearly 100 students attended, and I believe that is just the beginning.
My role in the event had many facets. My position on the E-Board was deemed "Hacker Manager" meaning I was responsible for the Hackers, their experience, and the challenges as well as other parts of the event. I would also be one of the three main individuals responsible for running the event, and was responsible for finding sponsors as well as workshops for the event. I even had the honor of holding a workshop on AI and Neural Networks that over 90% of the students at Southern Hacks attended!
I couldn't have done any of it alone, and under the guidance of the Lead Organizer, Shelby Cauron, and with assistance from the phenomenal students at Georgia Southern, we managed to pull off an amazing event. This was something we had in the works the entire school year, and I am very proud of what we accomplished.
Our plans for 2021 are even bigger and badder than ever before! I have been appointed as the Lead Organizer of the event for 2021, and am excited to tell you more as we get closer to the event. The event will occur in the Spring of 2021, so stay tuned!
My responsibilities for the upcoming event are numerous, but some of the biggest tasks I am currently working on are setting up the team that will help me work on the event, communicating with various school departments to gain support for the school for this Student Led event, and involving the students on campus in the planning and organization of Southern Hacks. I am also working on setting up a sponsor plan so we can gain funding for the event, as Hackathons are great places for companies to find astonishing talent, and hope to be able to reach out soon!
