Prevalence - New Zealand and Internationally
OIA request for NZ Data: www.health.govt.nz/system/files/documents/information-release/h2023019935_response.pdf
ADHD now part of National Disability Survey: www.adhd.org.nz/adhd-nzs-submission-to-statistics-nz-for-the-2023-disability-survey.html. ADHD NZ asked for this because there was no formal collection of statistics on ADHD prevalence in New Zealand in order to target and improve services.
Internationally, ADHD occurs in between 7-8 percent of children and adolescents. (Salari et al. 2023). Adult prevalence is less than this, but awareness of ADHD experiences is increasing.
Misdiagnosis/Under-diagnosis
ADHD has in the past not been well understood. The different presentations such as inattentive ADHD are more difficult to spot. Adults have often gone through life without knowing that ADHD was an added barrier to their success. This article touches on some of the reasons for ADHD misdiagnosis. https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/misdiagnosed-adhd-in-adults/#:~:text=Doctors%20often%20mistake%20ADHD%20symptoms,hyperactivity%20can%20be%20turned%20inward.
