How to choose a Bible: 

There are a spectrum of Bible translations. Remember, the Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek, so there's different sayings and phrases that can either be translated literally, or be translated into how we would say them in English. I would stick to word-for-word or thought-for-thought for my daily Bible reading and wisdom, but I'm not opposed to reading a paraphrase like The Message, as long as I know it's not the Bible-- just like I read historical fiction about the Bible. It can me help understand concepts that are difficult to understand otherwise.
