1) Grade: 2nd Grade
2) Subject: Math
3) Title of Lesson: Pizza Fractions
4) Objectives of Lesson: to learn and identity fractions and to learn how to visualize them even on a pizza!
5) List of Materials Needed: homemade or downloaded worksheets for fraction lesson. (In this case homemade because lesson is original)
6) Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Students will be able to identify and describe fractions (Standard 5)
7) California Academic Common Core Content Standards (List which standards are being used for this particular lesson): Reason with shapes and their attributes. being able to describe shapes using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third, etc.
8) Agenda:
a) Intro (5 min): have students come up to the board and draw pizzas. (Let’s see if they’re going to draw the slices in the pizzas that represent the fractions)
b) Guided Instruction (10 min): draw a big pizza on the whiteboard and show the students the different slices and how they can also be seen as fractions (Half of the pizza or 1/4 of the pizza in slices)
c) Student Practice (10 min) have a worksheet made (or even downloaded from online) for the students to do where they have to shade in the parts of the pizza. if the question says “Sarah ate 1 / 2 of the pizza” t hen the student would shade in half of all the slices. if the student is having a hard time they can raise t heir hand for help.
d) Assessment: have student volunteers come up to the whiteboard and draw a full pizza (circle). I will tell the student a fraction ( 1 /2 , 1 / 3, etc) and they will shade in accordingly.
9) Grading Rubric: 7 points.
2 points for being a student volunteer to the whiteboard (two separate times!)
5 points for finishing the worksheet in class.
10) Homework List: a similar worksheet as before but not pizza, maybe a cookie, or cake, etc. anything that can but cut or sliced into fractions.
