Computer overuse has been a serious problem for the past several years. One aspect of the information age has been the novel concerns deriving from advanced IT technology--which include Internet addiction, gambling, and so on. These Internet-based problems have emerged in many countries, including South Korea. In an effort to solve this problem, the South Korean government has created a variety of programs designed to cure teenagers' Internet addictions, most notably the Jump Up Internet Rescue School, a camp designed to cure Internet-addicted or online game-addicted children. In this study, we review this boot-camp program and present a brief review of the literature concerning Internet addiction and habit theory. Additionally, we provide some useful implications for the Korean government and other countries, practitioners, and researchers. It is also anticipated that the findings from this study will provide us with a better understanding of how case-study-based research into Internet addiction curative programs can be regarded as a burgeoning field of Internet-related research.

Table 3 presents the result of multilevel regression modeling to predict addictive Internet use among adolescents. Girls were much less likely to be addicted to the Internet than boys. The score of addictive Internet use increased gradually during middle school years, yet they decreased during high school years. Self-rated academic achievement was inversely associated with addictive Internet use. As the parental education level and the FAS increased, the score of addictive Internet use was significantly decreased. Tobacco use was inversely associated with addictive Internet use while alcohol use was not a significant factor. Substance use showed the strongest association with addictive Internet use. All the variables of physical activities showed inverse associations with addictive Internet use. Higher scores of addictive Internet use were associated with higher levels of sleep dissatisfaction. Psychological characteristics such as depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation showed positive associations with addictive Internet use. Regarding school characteristics, girls attending girls' schools were more likely to have addictive Internet use than those attending coeducational schools.

Our findings on self-rated academic achievement, physical activities, and psychological status confirm previous studies [17], [22], [35]. Self-rated academic achievement was inversely associated with addictive Internet use, yet the association was stronger in boys than girls. The difference might be attributable to unequal pressure for better academic achievement between genders. In a male dominant society, such as in Asian communities with Confucian backgrounds, parental expectations still focus more on boys with the traditional perspective of men as breadwinners, responsible for earning money for their families. As their academic excellence affects later social and economic positions, boys of low academic achievement may be more stressed than their girl counterparts. This societal atmosphere might induce boys to be addicted to the Internet which provides a hideout from reality [3] or eases their stress with illusory feelings of achievement and self-esteem [54]. The boys addicted to the Internet in this way might waste time for study leading iteratively to poor academic achievement (reverse causality). This study also confirms the past results reporting associations of Internet addiction with depression [17], suicidal behaviors [55], lower self-rated sleep satisfaction [3], and substance use [56].

South Korea is one of the most wired countries in the world. But that level of connectivity is a double-edged sword in a society that some experts say is becoming increasingly addicted to the Internet and where 95% of adults own a smartphone.

"It is important for the U.S. government and relevant experts to pay attention to this issue," says psychiatrist Roh, "to screen out addicted students and provide adequate therapy to those diagnosed with game addiction."

South Korea was in shock today after police arrested a couple Wednesday for child neglect that allegedly caused their 3-month-old daughter to starve to death. The husband, 41, and wife, 25, were addicted to online games, spending up to 12 hours every night at Internet cafes, police said.

SEOUL, March 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's young students are roughly five times more likely to be addicted to the Internet, compared to Japanese youths, a study showed Monday, prompting calls for stronger countermeasures against the possible social repercussions in the densely wired nation.

The number of fourth graders addicted to both the Internet and smartphones this year is 7,973. Last year, it was 5,967. Meanwhile, 32,245 fourth grade students are addicted to either the Internet or smartphones, a rise from 26,693 last year.

The National Information Society Agency estimates that 160,000 South Korean children between 5 and 9 years old are addicted to the Internet either through smartphones, tablets or personal computers. Such children appear animated when using gadgets but distracted and nervous when they are cut off from the devices, and they will forgo eating or going to the toilet so they can keep playing online, the agency says.

The government estimated that 2.55 million South Koreans are addicted to smartphones, using the devices for at least eight hours a day, in its first such survey, released earlier this year. Smartphone addicts find it difficult to live without their handsets, and their constant use disrupts work and social life, according to the information agency. Most of their personal interaction is carried out on the mobile handset. Overuse of smartphones might be accompanied by physical symptoms such as turtle-neck syndrome caused by having the head in a constant forward position, and a pain or numbness in fingers or wrists.

The goal of the study was to examine the prevalence and psychiatric comorbidities of Internet addiction in a nationwide sample of Korean adults. Among a total of 6,022 participants involved in Korean Epidemiological Catchment Area study in 2011, 3,723 Internet users were assessed for their Internet addiction using Young's 8-item Diagnostic Questionnaire. The results showed that of the 3,723 Internet users, 39 (1.0%) had Internet addiction. Addicted Internet users were younger, more likely to be males and unemployed compared to non-addicted Internet users. Internet addiction was associated with alcohol and nicotine use disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorder after controlling for age, gender, and occupational status. Internet addiction was associated with suicidal plans even after controlling for psychiatric disorders and socio-demographic factors. This study showed that Internet addiction is highly associated with variety of different psychiatric disorders and suicidal plans. Therefore, clinicians should carefully evaluate them when treating addicted Internet users.

Addictive Internet users were younger (p=0.009) than usual Internet users. They were more likely to be male (p=0.027) and unemployed (p=0.006) compared to usual Internet users. Educational status and economic status were not significantly different between the two groups. A total of 74.4% of addicted Internet users and 29.1% of usual Internet users had at least one DSM-IV psychiatric disorder (Table 1).

Consistent with prior findings,8 addicted Internet users were more likely to be younger adults than usual users. This might be attributed to the fact that younger adults have easier access to technology. The finding of higher prevalence of IA in males is similar to that reported in prior studies.71718 In addition, addicted Internet users were more likely to be unemployed, compatible with a positive association between IA and unsatisfactory financial status reported in a previous study.8 Excessive Internet use might provide a psychological escape from personal difficult situations such as unemployment. However, it might may further impede their social functioning as well.19 be457b7860
