Welcome to my professional website!
I am a recent doctoral graduate and scholar-advocate from the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. I am an independent consultant and advocate based in Los Angeles. My recent work has involved Strategic Planning for the Chicanx/Latinx Alumni Association with the University of California system. My current work involves developing committee reports with The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) to advocate for sanitation workers and address the lack of state oversight at landfills throughout California. In Los Angeles, I serve as Chair of the Housing, Renters, and Homelessness Committee on the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, Budget Advocate for Region 8, and the Vice Chair of the Congress of Neighborhood Councils.
Academically, I study health politics and political-economic development in comparative perspective, with a focus on Latin America, specifically Mexico and Brazil. My dissertation explores why Brazilian mayors varied in their COVID-19 responses, despite state governors' attempts to create a uniform response. The dissertation also provides a novel theoretical framework, which distinguishes everyday politics from what I call subnational crisis politics.
My research employs quantitative and qualitative methods to explain social and political phenomena. This includes survey experiments, conjoint analyses, ethnographic interviewing, and in-depth case study research.
My research has received generous support from the U.S. Fulbright Program, the Institute for International Studies (IIS), the Governance and Local Development Institute at the University of Gothenburg (GLD), the National Science Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (in collaboration with Brown University's Pandemic Center).
