Rhode Island is the smallest state by area and, as such, has a small system of numbered highways. Only one mainline Interstate crosses through the state: I-95, but it does have two auxiliary Interstates in I-195 and I-295. US 1, US 6, and US 44 are the only mainline U.S. Highways in the state, but two rare U.S. 'A' route exist in US 1A and US 6A. The state highway system is interesting in that is seems to have no distinct rhyme or reason in how or where numbers are assigned, and there are only a handful of routes with numbers below 100. There are a total of 70 numbered highways in the entire state, and I've traveled 40.
