Meet Matthew Adams
The Candidate Who Puts Community First
A lifelong resident of Woodbridge, Matthew is running for the District 9 Assembly seat because he believes that our communities deserve a representative who will fight for us: not for corporate interests.
As an educator and community organizer, Matthew has spent his career working to uplift others and tackle the tough challenges we face. He’s seen firsthand how our schools, neighborhoods, and local economies can thrive when we put people over profits, and he’s ready to bring that same determination to the State Assembly.
Matthew’s background in education and community organizing uniquely equips him to serve the people of District 9. As a teacher, Matthew has taught middle school and high school students in mathematics, science, and social studies, working every day to prepare the next generation for success. His experiences across the state of California, from the Bay Area to the Central Valley, have deepened his understanding of what today’s students and educators need to thrive.
Matthew has a long history of working with community organizations to make a meaningful impact. As a Regional Field Organizer for Equality California, he led voter registration and education campaigns, recruiting and training volunteers for phone-banking, text-banking, and canvassing efforts across the Central Valley in support of candidates that shared his values regarding working on behalf of our LGBTQ+ community. His work helped strengthen relationships between local elected officials, candidates, and community partners, ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities were heard.
Additionally, Matthew served as a Volunteer Services Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento, where he managed volunteers, coordinated events, and enhanced the organization’s outreach efforts through social media, all in service of helping the homeless.
His work with these organizations has deepened his commitment to community-driven solutions and the belief that when we work together, we can overcome any challenge.
A passionate advocate for his community, Matthew has also brought people together through the power of performance and storytelling. As a longtime performer and referee with ComedySportz Sacramento, he’s used improv comedy to connect with audiences and foster creativity. His role as High School League Director allowed him to mentor students, teaching them the skills of improvisation, teamwork, and confidence: tools that not only build better performers, but stronger, more collaborative communities.
In addition to his work in education, Matthew has built a strong record as a community organizer. He’s worked on campaigns all across our state, leading campaign efforts across the Central Valley, Bay Area, and Sacramento. Whether it's canvassing neighborhoods, organizing events, or working with volunteers, Matthew is committed to ensuring every voice is heard.
This also includes working for District 9's former Assemblymember Jim Cooper as an intern, where he worked alongside the team, staffing many community events, performing constituent services, among other tasks.
Matthew’s vision for the future is clear: a thriving Central Valley where families can find good jobs, students receive quality education, and local communities are prioritized. He’s committed to ensuring that every voice in District 9 is heard, and that our region gets the resources it needs to grow and prosper.
Matthew is proud to call Woodbridge home, which is also where he lived when he graduated from Lodi High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from California State University, Sacramento. Through his work, Matthew remains committed to lifting others up and creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and empowered.
