Purpose of Establishing Routines

How do you feel when you are asked to do something and feel that you were not given clear directions?

Are there unpredictable spaces that you travel through on a daily basis?

As empathetic educators, our answers to questions like these can help us frame how we think about the routines and procedures in our classroom. According to Berit Gordon, a primary reason we have clear classroom routines and procedures is to minimize the "unpredictability and chaos" that most of our students experience on a daily basis.

I am convinced that being explicit about the routines and procedures we are setting up is one of the most proactive strategies teachers can use to maximize instruction time and minimize and respond to intellectual and behavioral disruptions.
