Origin of the Name: ADA (Xi Ju) Awards

The name “Xi Ju” is a homophonic play on the Chinese word for “theatre” (戏剧).

The character “Ju” (炬), meaning “torch,” symbolizes an enduring flame of passion. It also signifies continuity and inheritance, representing the passing down of theatrical traditions.

In addition, “Ju” echoes “Ju” (具), meaning “mask.” Traditionally known as “lianpu” (面谱), masks have long been a symbolic totem of theatrical art.

Thus, “Xi Ju” embodies three layers of meaning: theatre, torch, and mask.
