Health and Wellness Coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work, coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, and honoring that each client is an expert on his or her life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental.
Wellness coaches are practitioners and life-long students of coaching psychology, a field focused on the scientific study of happiness and well-being.
Great coaches have several skills you will notice early. They are great listeners and enjoy your stories. They foster self-acceptance and self-respect. They arouse, engage, energize, and challenge you to reach higher at the right moment. They have a bird dog's ability to sniff out your strengths, values, and desires. They are playful when appropriate. They take risks and ask courageous questions. They don't rescue you from emotional muck - sometimes you need to sit in it for a bit to energize your desire to change. They know that your life is at stake if you don't take care of yourself. And they know how to celebrate your successes.
The process of coaching progresses through several stages:
You provide background information through various assessments, so that you and your coach are well-informed on the key issues, including medical considerations, as appropriate.
During the Initial Consultation coaching session, you clarify your priorities and develop a personal wellness plan including a vision, three month goals and the first action steps.
In subsequent 30-45 minute coaching sessions, you and your coach review the progress toward your vision and goals, explore and resolve the most pressing issues, learn something new, and then design goals for the following week. You will enjoy plenty of "ah-ha" insights along the way.
Health & Wellness Coaching requires consistent engagement to cultivate positive and sustainable results.

Laura Rain Tree is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach and sole proprietor of Activate Health & Wellness. Laura is best known by her nickname "Rain" and has worked as a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant in Western North Carolina for 22 years. She accumulated a wealth of clinical experience and a suite of skills from working with patients who come from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds and health status in the acute care, outpatient, skilled nursing and aquatic physical therapy settings.
Coach Rain is passionate about personal health and wellness and holds unshakable belief in every person's ability to make meaningful positive changes happen in their lives. She was drawn to Health & Wellness Coaching as the most effective method to empower clients to move beyond the continuous cycle of injury, illness and chronic disease she treated in the standard health care setting and endeavors to support clients in taking control over their lives with improved self-care behaviors.
"I believe every person has what they need inside them to live the healthy life they desire. In this information age, clients often know what they "should" do for improved health, but lack the "how to skills" in order to move through the change process, navigate challenges and build the healthy habits over time that translate their desired robust health into reality. I coach clients to leverage their internal motivation and individual strengths to take action. I use evidenced based coaching techniques and protocols that build their confidence to explore, find and use what works for them as an individual and together we discover tailor fit strategies that work best for them to succeed in sustainable behavior change. Every person has tremendous power to effect change in their own lives."
Rain became a Certified Health & Wellness Coach in August 2016 after successfully completing the Wellcoaches School of Coaching *certification program. She became an ACE certified Personal Trainer in 2017 and an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor in 2020 [American Council on Exercise]. She became a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) in March 2020.
"We live in a rapidly changing world filled with technology that can leave a person behind. Health & Wellness coaches support people in making the healthy positive changes they need, as quickly as possible, in order to thrive in our fast paced world and translate their dreams into reality."
Coach Rain loves the mountains! She runs, bikes, hikes and swims in the National Forest whenever she can. In the 1990's she worked as an Outdoor Experiential Educator for 3 years at the Wolfcreek Wilderness School in Northeast Georgia, as a whitewater raft guide on the Chattooga River in South Carolina and was a certified Wilderness First Responder for 6 years. She has raced competitively on the state, regional and national levels as a Masters runner in track, trail and road racing. She holds a BA in English Literature, a BA in General Science and is a dedicated life long learner. She has taught both subjects on a high school level, but finds her best work is done ‘one on one' with clients coaching them to success in their personal health and wellness goals.
* The Wellcoaches School of Coaching is considered the Gold Standard in the Health Coaching industry, works in strategic partnerships with the American College of Sports Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
