3A-1 GLOBAL CONTEMPORARY ART: THE QUEST FOR NO IDENTITY
Author/s: Ana Neliza B. del Mundo-Angeles
Abstract
The concept of global citizenship plays a part in shaping youth’s comprehension of what is happening in the world around them, contemplate on their principles and what is valuable to them, and eventually getting them involved to raise their voices and realize they can wield force to have an effect on their environment. (Oxfam, 2021) This research believes that art educators can help shape young minds to use their art to propagate awareness on global citizenship and the Social Development Goals. Since the landscape of art is ever changing, more so, world events are very dynamic and needs our immediate action, the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects at the very least. Artists, people who could be the most open- minded among others, should be the ones to help shape that landscape. Aspiring global citizens will be more aware and have more understanding of the world around them and they can participate more in the community leading to a more just and sustainable planet.
Certain works surpass the culture where they came from to manifest wider universal values. These works richly epitomize the distinctiveness of their culture, often rooted in the local, yet were able to speak beyond their boundaries (Benton, J. & DiYanni, R., 2002). This research does not necessarily strip the artworks and their artists of their Filipino identity in vain, instead it strives to promote “unity in diversity” to unite nations as one big community sans nationality, color, race, or language. This study believes that Philippine contemporary art can be a catalyst for change by making a positive difference grounded on the beliefs of global citizenship through integration of the concept in the curriculum. Instead of identifying as Philippine or Asian art, it can be geared towards being identified as global art for humanity in general encompassing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals (2015). The research does not universalize the styles or elements but the themes which are relatable to viewers.
3A-2 BAKLA SI SIR: PAGTATANGHAL NG PAGKAKABAKLA NG MGA BAKLANG GURO GAMIT ANG GENDER PEFORMATIVITY NI BUTLER
Author/s: John Lloyd O. Cañones
Abstract
3A-3 THE LEVELS OF SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING ABILITIES OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
Author/s: Charles Joshua T. Elepaño
Abstract
Lifelong learning is associated to the self-directed learning abilities of an individual and pre-service science teachers should have the necessary abilities to become lifelong learners. The aim of this study is to determine the levels of self-directed learning abilities of pre-service science teachers and to determine whether their levels of self-directed learning abilities vary when they are grouped by gender, level of year, and course. The total number of respondents in this study is 89 pre-service science teachers currently enrolled under teacher education in a state university in the Philippines. Two instruments were utilized in this study which are the Personal Information Form and Self – Directed Learning Instrument (SDLI) which was entirely adopted from Su-Fen Cheng, Chien-Lin Kuo, Kuan-Chia Lin, and Jane Lee-Hsieh (2001). Generally, the results revealed that the levels of the self-directed learning abilities of pre-service science teachers were generally high along its four domains. Independent samples t-test showed that there is no significant difference between the levels of self-directed learning abilities in terms of gender and year level. Additionally, the used of one-way ANOVA revealed that there is no significant difference between levels of self-directed learning abilities of pre-service science teachers and their course. The results suggest further studies to be conducted to determine other underlying factors that will affect the levels of self-directed learning of pre-service science teachers.
3A-4 EXPLORING THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF INDIGENOUS COLLEGE STUDENTS USING PHOTOVOICE: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS YOUTH'S WELLBEING
Author/s: Arlan E. Dela Cruz
Access to quality education, from primary, secondary, and all the way to tertiary levels, has long been considered to be an effective strategy for the improvement and promotion of indigenous youth’s overall well-being. This phenomenological case study explores the lived experiences of four indigenous Aeta youth members who aspire to finish their college education in the Philippines. Using the photo elicitation technique of Photovoice, data were collected through focus group discussions and one-on-one interviews for over a period of two years since June of 2018. Six themes emerged in the interviews: “display of resilience”, “living in two worlds”, “education is the key”, “family first”, “pride for the indigenous community”, “inclusive and supportive environment”. The study recommends that tertiary schools adopt a whole school approach to promote positive school learning environment and holistic well-being for its indigenous student population. Further, future studies need to focus on examining the impact of gender, family and the community dynamics in the academic success of the indigenous student.

Author/s: Arnel D. Daliva
Abstract
The study was aimed at finding the relevance of outreach activities as a form of transformative education which provides the holistic formation of the present learners of St. Scholastica’s College Manila. The institution genuinely campaigns for “education for justice and social transformation.” This study utilized a qualitative method (open-ended questionnaire) to generate significant data pertinent to the objectives of the study. There were thirty-nine students conveniently selected to answer two questions and one open-ended statement based on their most memorable outreach activities in high school with the corresponding descriptions that supported the respondents’ answers. The participants responded reflectively and critically on how the outreach activities helped them improve their relationship with others. Based on their responses, the study participants learned values promoted by the school. Moreover, the outreach activities as a part of the curriculum’s critical pedagogies were carried out with commitment by the learners to holistically contribute to the genuine societal transformation. Furthermore, significant ideas and values on the relevance of the outreach activities were drawn from the results and discussed faithfully based on the respondents’ experiences. The outreach activities as a form of transformative education gave the respondents better perspectives of their own blessings in life and their commitment to help and serve others especially the less fortunate. The study therefore recommends that outreach activities must become a vital component of every academic institution.

Author/s: Christopher H. Punzalan & Lovella M. Escalante
Abstract
Real-world knowledge via exposure activities could be positively enriched with the aid of situated learning. In a way to practice this theory and to revolutionize the educational system, this phenomenological-qualitative research was conducted to analyze how natural history museum supports the interest of STEM students towards the environmental issues. Specifically, this study ought to answer the research questions: how did natural history museum improve the interest of STEM students towards environmental issues?, what are the changes in students’ conceptions of learning environmental issues after the museum exposure?, how museums could make environmental issues seem more ‘real’ and urgent?, what opportunities the students received in meeting museum staff?, and how do students compare what they learn and how they learn environmental issues in formal and informal science settings? Data triangulation technique including observation, semi-structured questionnaire and focus group discussion was administered to 20 STEM students enrolled in a private educational institution in the Philippines through purposive-sampling during the year 2019. The results of the study showed patterns according to the students’ individual sensory experiences from the museum visit. The reports of the students were analyzed and emerged in four themes: solving environmental problems by means of education, causes and effects of environmental issues, inquiry-based learning of natural history, and interesting and realistic learning scheme. It was indicated that the natural history museum do support the interest and learning of STEM students towards environmental issues at some aspects.

Author/s: Christopher H. Punzalan & Ma. Lyka M. Balanac
Abstract
Universally, trees have been an important part of urban landscapes for millennia since they offer adequate benefits to humanity. Studies highlighted the positive impacts of biodiversity conservation in the students’ academic performance but there is still lack of literature pertaining to its role on the promotion of environmental education in the Philippines. On this note, this study aimed to analyze the Filipino senior high school students’ perceptions and experiences on participating in a tree planting activity, identify the implications of tree planting activity in studying Earth and Life Sciences, and explore the perceived constraints and opportunities. The study design is descriptive-qualitative in nature. Based on the qualitative data analysis, five themes have emerged such as: (1) simple yet beneficial; (2) opportunities and constraints; (3) practical application of learning; (4) environmental awareness promotion; and (5) mitigating environmental degradation. In conclusion, tree planting activity as a part of the field study program in schools is one of the most effective ways to combat and slow down the effect of global warming while promoting the students’ academic interests. This study also highlighted the positive impact of tree planting by improving the Filipino students’ perceptions of life, community, and environment which is the goal of 21st century education. Lastly, the study recommends the development of extension programs to school communities in the Philippines and worldwide that will arouse the interests and participations of the students to tree planting activity, gardening and ecological tours by partnering with relevant organizations and agencies.

3D-1 EXPLORING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS' SOCIAL REPRESENTATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY
Author/s: Joy D. Talens
Abstract
In this time of pandemic, teachers are should be flexible in continuously offering quality education. Being one of the Teacher Education Institutions, De La Salle Lipa trains pre-service teachers in developing and enhancing 21 st century skills. Environmental literacy is one of these skills needed by them to understand the environment and interaction between living and non – living things as they perform their roles as stewards of all creations. In the process, appreciation and participation in the preservation and conservation of the environment will be nourished among future teachers. Thus, this study explored the social representations of environmental literacy among pre-service teachers enrolled in “Building and Enhancing Literacy Skills Across the Curriculum” using content analysis. Twenty-three respondents enrolled during the Second Semester, A. Y. 2020 – 2021 wrote a reflection paper on the topic via a learning management system. Themes were identified along the following components: (1) definition of environmental literacy; (2) importance of being an environmentally literate individual; (3) roles of educational system in developing environmental literacy; and, (4) preparations to be done as future teachers on how to incorporate environmental literacy in different lessons. . It was found that respondents viewed this literacy as deeply rooted in the community; thus, they recognize their important roles to play and believe that environmental issues, problems and concerns can be solved through collaborative efforts. Likewise, they have broad concepts of environmental literacy; thus, sample active learning strategies via online or offline mode of instruction are being proposed to sustain the learners’ understanding.
