A GUIDE TO LEARN HOW TO CORRECTLY CREATE YOUR SKIN
This is not a generic tutorial on how to use Photoshop, Gimp or other softwares. This guide wants to help you through the specific steps to create a skin for Assetto Corsa only.
Image editing software: Photoshop is the best of course but it's not mandatory. Gimp can also be good (and it's free!)
Content Manager: not mandatory, but makes things faster and easier!
Nvidia DDS Plugin: required to export your skins to .dds file format.
Templates: for Kunos' cars they can be found in AC's folder here assettocorsa\sdk\dev\skin_templates.
Remember: Photoshop can open 3D templates, so it's recommended to use them if you have them.
Adobe is removing 3D from Photoshop but it's still working at the moment. If you're using a new version (2020 or later) you need to change an option: go to Preferences > Technology previews > and check Deactivate native canvas.
Where to create it: assettocorsa\content\cars\your_car\skins. (replace your_car with the folder of the car you want)
How to name it: you could give any name to it but I recommend to use this pattern number_name_number.
Example: 00_custom_skin_05. the first number is to keep the folders organized, the last number usually is the number that goes on the skin.
File Format: DDS DXT5 (if you have the new dds exporter you'll find BC3 instead of DXT5). Disable Mipmaps.
File Resolution: remember to keep your maximum file resolution to 4096px (2048px for decal files).
File Name: this depends on which car you're doing the skin of. What you can do is open another skins and see how the livery file is called.
What to not do: don't save uncompressed 8192px files! This will cause huge files and big impact on performances!
Carbon Fiber depends on the Alpha Channel of the file.
How Alpha Channel works: it's just black and white colors, black is the transparency, white is solid color.
How to set up the RGB channel: be sure that all the parts where carbon fiber should be are white, otherwise you'll see colors on it.
How to set up the Alpha channel: be sure that all the parts where carbon fiber should be are black. Everything else need to be white.
