Introduction of our Theatre class instructor Mrs. Knuti VanHoven:

Hi. My name is Knuti VanHoven and I am excited to be teaching a theatre class in the American Chinese School. My degree is in Theatre and Psychology, from Sonoma State University. I taught Theatre, Voice, Accent Reduction and American Culture for the Fremont Adult School for over ten years.

Writing has been an important part of my work. I love poetry and plays but I’ve also done children's stories,song lyrics, instructional materials, speeches, advertising copy, flyers, posters and simple contracts, Most of the best jobs I’ve had came as the result of a written proposal. In the working world, if you don’t write well, you’re likely to be ignored.

So I write for work, but writing is also my hobby! You may have seen my articles in the Tri-City Voice? Most of them are promoting events of the Fremont Area Writers’ Club, where authors and publishing industry leaders come to give us insights on professional writing. Before each event, I get to work with them on their presentations!

They’ve impressed me that learning to write well is never enough. To succeed, you also need to learn how to present your writing in ways that make people want to read it. These same skills will help you present your ideas in both academics and your future jobs.
