February 2025
Dear all, we were so excited finally get together in Quebec City with 127 presenters in the program as well as the amazing plenary sessions, governmental and artistic guests. Many exciting things are in the works for the "off-year" for ACQS. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities, and don't forget to send in your abstracts for the ACSUS conference in Seattle.
Our devoted president and leader, Yulia Bosworth, recently had an opinion letter published in Le Devoir addressing the recent surge in negative sentiment - albeit very understandable - towards the U.S. in Canadian and Quebec press. As scholars of Quebec and folks that deeply care about our relationship with our neighbors to the north, Yulia's letter expresses what many of us feel, so make sure to check it out!: Faire rayonner le Québec aux États-Unis, une personne à la fois
As you may recall, we keep a repository of syllabi on our website to help promote Quebec studies in courses as well as provide resources for those of us teaching Quebec materials in our classes (https://acqs.org/activities/ ). We want to make sure to keep our repository full and fresh, so please send any syllabi you would like to share to an executive board member, and we will add it to the archive. Many thanks in advance for your contributions to this important endeavor!
Finally, don't forget that the ACQS has funding for scholars who promote the study of Québec at conferences where Québec or Canadian Studies are not the primary focus! This grant offers up to $250 of support towards conference registration fees for ACQS members presenting on Québec or Francophone North America. To be considered for this grant, please send your application information to Dr. Yulia Bosworth (bosworth@binghamton.edu). You can find all the details here: Quebec Studies Conference Grant.
Bien cordialement,

Bonne année à toutes et à tous !
Last fall's Biennial Conference truly an amazing affair ! We convened in Quebec City in October, under beautiful skies, for our biennial gathering. The presentations were amazing, and we had over 125 presenters on a wide range of topics! We were finally able to assemble at the venue we had selected for our 2020 colloquium--the Hôtel Le Concorde--with beautiful panoramic views of the city of Québec & the Plaines d'Abraham, October 3-6th, 2024. Our program was packed with such great events from the Emerging Scholars Colloquium to an evening with Kim Thúy and a screening of her 2023 film Ru. Friday and Saturday's screening and receptions were just as exciting as we welcomed Jean-François Roberge, the minister de la Langue Française, director Hélène Choquette, sociolinguist Chantal Bouchard, and a had concert by poets and musicians Bernard Pozier and Christopher Mark Jones. It was truly a great conference. We can't wait until ACQS 2026!
In order to promote the study of Québec at conferences where Québec or Canadian Studies are not the primary focus (e.g. disciplinary conferences for history, political science, languages, linguistics, etc.) this grant offers up to $250 of support towards conference registration fees for ACQS members presenting on Québec or Francophone North America.

Dear ACQS members,
In my first letter to you, I would like to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to Amy Ransom for her incredible work to promote scholarship on Québec for so many years as our Editor in Chief of Québec Studies (and before that, as our Associate Editor for Book Reviews). It will be very difficult to follow in her footsteps after the amazing dossiers she has organized and the exceptional editorial work that she has done to help shape the research that has appeared in the journal all these years. Amy has changed the direction of Québec studies in so many important ways, and I am truly grateful for her vision and her leadership. Un grand merci, Amy!
I also want to take this opportunity to give my profuse thanks to Leslie Choquette, who is continuing in her role as Associate Editor for the Social Sciences for Québec Studies. Her dedication to the journal will be evident in the upcoming issue, QS 79 (summer 2025) where the majority of the articles focus on social science topics. Please continue to send your social sciences submissions to Leslie (lchoquet@assumption.edu).
This letter also serves as a warm welcome to Ioana V. Pribiag, who has stepped in to the role of Associate Editor of Book Reviews since January 1. Ioana is an Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Minnesota, and an active member of ACQS. She has published work on poetry of the Quiet Revolution and is interested in contemporary Indigenous and minority cultural productions in Québec. She just created this year the Collectif des études du cinéma et des médias au Québec (CECIMEQ), a group of international scholars - many of whom are ACQS members - whose research focuses on Québec film and media. If you are interested in becoming a book reviewer for Québec Studies, please send your areas of specialization to Ioana (ivartolo@umn.edu).
A little about me: I have been a member of ACQS for over thirty years, starting when I took the Québec Summer Seminar with Jeanne Kissner and Richard Beach. My fond memories of their wonderful introduction to all things Québec have remained strong with me over the past three decades. I served as the ACQS Vice-President and Conference Chair in 2006-2007, and ACQS President in 2008-2009. Since my research focuses on women writers from France and Québec, I served as the President of the Women in French organization in 2008-2011, and then as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Women in French Studies from 2014 to 2019. I currently teach in and chair the department of French & Francophone Studies at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
I you have any questions about special dossiers or individual articles that you are working on, please don’t hesitate to contact me (jmrogers@macalester.edu). Many thanks to all those ACQS members who have submitted work and who have evaluated articles for the journal. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

ACSUS 2025 27th Biennial Conference
Canada: Spaces of Change
November 13-16, 2025
Hyatt at Olive 8, Seattle, WA
The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) will host its 27th biennial conference, November 13-16, 2025, in Seattle, WA. The conference is open to all proposals with a significant Canadian focus. We welcome papers and panel proposals from students, professors, independent scholars, and practitioners on all critical perspectives related to the theme “Canada: Spaces of Change.”
How is Canada perceived and portrayed from outside its borders, and by the international community? What are the historical and present-day nuances of Canada-US relations and where are they going? How are the US and Canada changing? What role does the border have in creating or working against familiarity, or belonging? What roles do non-governmental agencies around the world play in shaping Canada’s relationships with the world? Finally, as a
professional organization dedicated to the promotion of Canadian Studies, what is ACSUS’s role in these larger questions? Proposals that touch on these themes are encouraged though, as always, submissions on all subjects addressing Canada and Canadian-American relations are welcome.
To submit a proposal, please submit an abstract of not more than 300 words (including a working title), along with a brief vita (2 pages maximum), to www.acsus.org/conference no later than March 15, 2025. Paper presenters must be ACSUS members in good standing. Submissions from graduate students and exceptional undergraduates are warmly welcomed. Information on conference fees and membership rates are available on the ACSUS conference webpage. Confirmations regarding participation at the conference will be sent by April 1, 2025. Questions? Contact ACSUS conference program chair, Sara Beth Keough, sbkeough@svsu.edu.
ACSUS is an organization committed to the principles of equity, justice, and diversity and works to ensure meaningful inclusion.

Mark Paul Richard, Professor at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh
Richard, M. P. (2024). Catholics Across Borders: Canadian Immigrants in the North Country, Plattsburgh, New York, 1850-1950, Albany: SUNY Press.
Catholics across Borders examines the evolution of a French-speaking population in Plattsburgh over a century. Contrasting with New England’s francophone textile mill centers, Plattsburgh featured interethnic cooperation instead of conflict. The book explores how international events affected French Catholic identity at the local level, drawing from French-language newspapers and Catholic archives. Transnational Catholic migrants from Canada and France played a significant role in shaping local, regional, national, and international history in Plattsburgh and beyond, contributing to the larger narrative of the U.S. immigrant experience. This study provides a historic perspective for understanding the present.
