Bonjour à tous les membres de l’ACQS ! We hope that this newsletter finds you enjoying the last days of summer even as classes have begun at most of your institutions. The Executive Board is looking forward to seeing many of you in Baltimore in October, where we have a wonderful conference program lined up at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel, on the waterfront of the Inner Harbor. Early Bird registration and conference hotel discounts end on September 23rd, so please register and book your rooms as soon as possible!
A few highlights to note: the Emerging Scholars Colloquium will begin on Thursday morning, and we are delighted to welcome these early-career scholars to our Biennial. On Thursday evening, we will screen the 2021 film Les oiseaux ivres by Ivan Grbovic thanks to the dedication of Amy Ransom and Miléna Santoro. You will not want to miss it! As usual, throughout the weekend we have panels on literature, history, politics, film, and the teaching of Québec. At the Business Meeting on Sunday morning, members will be asked to vote to approve the new Constitution--see details below.

In 2019, the ACQS Executive Board reviewed the Constitution of our organization and took upon itself the task of streamlining and updating its language as well as proposing two substantive changes to the document.
One change includes language that would allow the Board to create by-laws for the organization, and to modify them periodically as needs arise. It is common practice for organizations like ours to have by-laws. This would allow the ACQS Executive Board to respond more quickly and efficiently to the needs of the society without having to amend the Constitution each time in order to do so. For example, the current Constitution makes no mention of a social media staff person, an invaluable asset not anticipated when the original Constitution was drafted nearly four decades ago.
The other change includes language for what would happen to the assets of the ACQS in the event of the organization’s dissolution. Please rest assured that the ACQS is on solid financial footing. It is typical, however, for organizations like ours to make such a provision, and the Executive Board thought it wise to do so while we are updating the Constitution.
Attached is the proposed language for the updated ACQS Constitution. You can compare it with the online version available on the ACQS website at acqs.org.
The ACQS Constitution requires that proposed revisions be circulated at the time the officers are elected (this was done in 2019 and this message is being sent as a reminder), and that they be approved by the membership at a general meeting. That meeting takes place on the last day of our biennial conference, originally scheduled in fall 2020 and which is now scheduled to take place in Baltimore this fall. We hope you will join us.

As you prepare your paper for the 2022 Biennial in Baltimore, we hope you will consider developing it into a submission for Québec Studies. The journal publishes individual papers as well as special dossiers on a theme.
Our forthcoming numbers, QS 74 (January/February 2023) and 75 (Summer 2023) each include special dossiers. QS 74 will feature "Œuvres retrouvées et pratiques romanesques des femmes avant la révolution féministe/ Rediscovered Works and Women’s Novelistic Practices before the Feminist Revolution"-- guest edited by Ariane Gibeau. QS 75 includes a special dossier, "La relève autochtone : voix contemporaines au Québec / Young Indigenous Authors from Quebec and Francophone Canada," coordinated by Joëlle Papillon and Tania Grégoire.
