When lubricating open-back tuners, I generally remove the strings, which allows me to turn the tuner freely in both directions. I apply a small drop to the point of contact between worm and pinion, and then use a string winder to turn the tuner fairly quickly. After about a 1/3 turn of the pinion gear (usually three to five turns of the handle), I apply another drop at the same contact point and repeat again after another four or five turns. Then, I turn continuously to move the pinion gear through another complete rotation. This generally leaves a nice, even layer of lubricant around the perimeter of the gear, without making too much of a mess. Keep a cotton swab on hand for any stray drops of oil that drip out.

Modern cast-body or sealed tuners are a different story. In the past, inexpensive tuners were known for low quality metal and poor manufacturing tolerances, and were frequently to blame for unstable tuning. Companies such as Grover, Schaller, and Gotoh addressed this by offering tuner upgrades with better gears, tighter tolerances, and fully enclosed bodies, which allowed the gears to turn in a bath of thick paste grease. These tuners were designed to be permanently closed, and in many cases they still perform admirably after decades of maintenance-free service. However, the small disc or plate that seals the back cover can fall out and be lost, exposing the gears within, and allowing the grease to collect contaminants.

When tuning, the Rimpitch-C2 detects the sound through the vibration of the guitar itself. The body features a proprietary structure with a closely attached piezo pickup, allowing the sound to be detected rapidly and accurately. The tuner can be attached to a round sound hole of 100 mm diameter (within 3mm), and is designed to fit a wide variety of acoustic guitars. Rubber cushions on both the inside and outside of the tuner ensure a secure fit and guarantee accurate tuning.

Hello everyone, I'm am currently trying to make a acoustic guitar tuner as a project and I am running into some problems. Currently using a Arduino Uno, swapping between two sound sensors to check if there is any difference and a lCD display with I2C which i will remove for simplicity for now. Those additional (and mostly higher) frequencies really do exist but you're trying to read/measure the fundamental frequency. Sometimes the harmonics are stronger than a fundamental. ...The lowest note on an acoustic piano ai an "A" at 27.5Hz but most of what you hear is harmonics. (I don't know if the fundamental is weaker or if it just sounds weaker because our ears are less sensitive to lower frequencies.)

At any time you can click the strings on the fretboard to listen to a reference tone. One common way of is to tune the guitar to itself. If you are a beginner it can be a good practise to use a combination of a reference tone and a guitar tuner. One thing to notice is that the online guitar tuner does not show the actual octave. I was using guitar tuna but my free trial ran out and now I can't tune to anything besides standard. I don't even want any extravagant tunings, just half step down. I found another one a while back but it was confusing so I uninstalled.

I'm a beginner and currently learning to play guitar. I have a polo acoustic guitar. when I try to tune it using a clip on electronic tuner it doesn't recognize the strings correctly. except for 6th and 2nd string it recognizes all strings wrong. then I tried with a tuner app using my phone but same result it also doesn't recognizes the strings correctly. I don't know what to do and what is the problem. as I'm a beginner I don't know how to tune without a tuner.Please help.

Lucky that it did recognise the 6th string, because from that you can easily tune all other strings by ear. Just compare the pitch that's produced when fingering the low E-string (6th string) at 5th fret with the empty A-string (5th string). It should be the same pitch, but it won't be necessary to get it exactly right: once you're close enough, the tuner will be able to track the A-string too. Just make sure you hear whether it's much too low or already to high (never tune a string much higher than it's supposed to be), and correct it.

Your clip on tuner will help you fine tune each string after you get it close with another method. It does not work well when starting from scratch as could be the case if you changed all the strings by taking them all off first or if the guitar was de-tuned for shipping.

If you find yourself in a situation in the future where none of the strings are close to being in tune and you want to tune the guitar from scratch there are several things you can do to get close enough for the clip on tuner to recognize the correct strings.

Another option is to use an on line tuning site such as this one: Free Online Guitar tuner Just listen to the pitch on line and adjust your tuning keys until the guitar string you want to tune is close to the sound you hear on the on-line tuner. Then use your clip on tuner to tweak and fine tune it from there.

Another option is to find an app that will play the sounds of a properly tuned guitar the way a pitch pipe would. Some of them have that feature. You would use the same process as an on-line tuning site (compare your string to the sound you hear and adjust until they are close to the same).

Finally, if you are lucky enough to have at least one string close enough for your tuner to pick up, fine tune that string and use that string to get the other strings close using the 5th and 4th fret tuning method described in leftaroundabout's excellent answer.
