A network of bicycle tourism trails across Texas would highlight the natural, historic, and exceptional landscapes across the many unique regions of the state. These tourism trails have the potential to attract bicyclists from around the world, showcase communities across the state, and boost economic development. The bicycle tourism trail network could also provide recreational and travel opportunities for local Texans craving a Monday-night ride, an alternative route to work, or perhaps a family weekend adventure.

NOTE: As you head out on the trail, remember to follow the guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local governments. For resources on how to #SharetheTrail and #RecreateResponsibly, go to railstotrails.org/COVID-19.

Texas City has a great hike-and-bike trail that continues throughout the city. The first trail, the Rotary Fitness Trail, was dedicated by the Rotary Club on June 2, 1981, and was located in Nessler Park, behind the Lowry Fitness Center. The trail was one-and-a-half miles long and included 18 fitness stations (Rotary Fitness Trail, 1981). Then in 1994, planning began on the Texas City Trails project, a two-phase project for constructing hike-and-bike trails across Texas City.

The first phase was dedicated on June 15, 1999, and included a five-mile segment that reached from the central municipal complex to the Bay Street Park (Andrews, 1999). The second phase was dedicated on October 20, 2000. The entire project cost a total of $2.3 million of city, state, and federal funds and is now a 12-mile trail in total (Brinly, 2000). The trails are a minimum of 10 feet wide and should accommodate a bike rider, rollerblader, and jogger all at the same time (Dale, 1998).

The trails go from Bay Street to the end of the Sanders Center and 12th Street to the corner of 4th Avenue South (Brinly, 2000) The trail also provides connections between the parks and several schools, including Blocker Middle School, Roosevelt-Wilson Elementary, Fatima, Texas City High School, and Kohfeldt Elementary (Dimitri, 1995).

Big Bend is a hiker's paradise containing the largest expanse of roadless public lands in Texas. More than 150 miles of trails offer opportunities for day hikes or backpacking trips. Elevations range from 1,800 feet along the Rio Grande to 7,832 feet on Emory Peak in the Chisos Mountains. Elevation changes produce an exceptional variety of plants, animals, and scenic vistas.

To protect the solitude and serenity of Big Bend's trails, groups larger than 30 persons must split up and hike different trails.

Pets are NOT ALLOWED on trails in Big Bend National Park.

In West Texas, Big Bend is a hiker's paradise with over 150 miles of trails. Both experienced backpackers and day hikers alike will enjoy the boundless beauty of this West Texas masterpiece. The most famous hike in Texas is the 12.6-mile South Rim trail. No other route has the grandeur and scope of this trek up the southern edge of the Chisos Mountains, and no other trail rewards hikers with such a mind-blowing view. Thousands of feet below, the Sierra Quemada badlands fade into desolate ridges on the other side of the Rio Grande. If you have the time, and the energy, add the 3.5-mile East Rim trail to your hike, which offers spectacular vistas of the Chihuahuan Desert, to your hike. The best part? Shady forests and cool temperatures make the hike comfortable year-round.

Trails are marked by degree of difficulty. All vehicles are required to remain on designated routes and trails. Whether you are an OHV enthusiast looking for a thrill or a spectator just "getting back to nature," you will enjoy the park. The park includes over 25 miles of trails in various degrees of difficulty. View the Trail Map.
