IEA AGS ISO TC 159 Panel Discussion

ISO/TC 159 is the dedicated technical committee within the International Organization for Standardization responsible for global standards in Ergonomics and Human Factors. Established in 1974, it oversees the development of guidelines ensuring that systems, products, and environments match human characteristics, abilities, and limitations.

The committee's standardization work is divided into four main subcommittees:

• SC 1 (General Ergonomics Principles): Focuses on human-centered design, mental workload, and principles for designing safe, healthy work systems.

• SC 3 (Anthropometry and Biomechanics): Develops standards for measuring the human body, evaluating working postures, and determining safe physical exertion and strength (e.g., pushing and pulling limits).

• SC 4 (Ergonomics of Human-System Interaction): Handles hardware and software ergonomics, interface design, usability engineering, and accessibility for computer-based systems.

• SC 5 (Ergonomics of the Physical Environment): Addresses the impact of the physical surroundings—such as thermal environments, lighting, vibrations, and noise—on human comfort, safety, and performance.

ISO/TC 159/SC 5 — Ergonomics of the Physical Environment — develops international standards on thermal conditions, noise, vibration, air quality, and visual environments. Managed by BSI, chaired by Dr. Simon Hodder, SC 5 has published 38 standards across four working groups. The IEA holds a Category A liaison, allowing experts to contribute directly. All standards are available in Singapore via the Enterprise Singapore Standards e-shop, alongside national standards (SS 553:2026, SS 554:2026, SS 657:2020) and the BCA Code on Accessibility 2025.
