The map below was created by fellow Va-LEND Trainee, Brianne Bannister, as part of her leadership project, The Adventure Access Project. This map includes trails, parks, playgrounds, and overlooks in Virginia that are navigable for adventurers with disabilities.
For best results, open the map in full screen. From there, you should be able to select the layers you would like to display. This works as a filter function!
Trails are coded using the following symbol system:
V - Trails that are intended for hikers with visual impairments
O - Overlook and Viewpoints that are wheelchair accessible. Some drives are included here as well.
M - Mobility Friendly - These are trails that are not necessarily ADA compliant, but are trails that have more easily navigable surfaces, low grades, wider paths, and/or rest areas along the trail. Please check the description for details and remember that weather conditions can impact non-paved trail materials, so always check conditions before heading out!
A - Trails that are listed as ADA compliant or accessible. These typically will be paved or a stable material to meet accessibility guidelines, or a firm packed material that can be accessed by a chair or stroller in good conditions. Please see notes in the details for additional accessibility information.
S - Sensory-friendly trails. These trails might be sensory trails specifically. They also might be trails that tend to be less crowded, quieter, or have other features that make them sensory-friendly. Since everyone's sensory needs differ, please check the description to see why a trail was added to this section.
