There are a lot of reasons a person would choose to use accessibility solutions on their computer or mobile device. There are also a lot of different options when deciding how to increase your accessibility. accessiBe offers a variety of services that work to make websites more accessible to all users everywhere. This blog article will focus on something called VPAT.
VPAT, also known as Voluntary Product Accessibility Template, is a document that lists criteria specifically for businesses. VPAT helps businesses assess and report the status of their website in terms of accessibility. accessiBe can work with several versions of VPAT, including Section 508, WCAG, Revised Section 508, International (INT), and EN301549.
It is important to note that you should always make sure your VPAT is updated any time your website goes through a redesign or each time major content is added or removed. If these updates do not take place during this time, they need to be renewed annually.
Individual companies don’t create VPAT independently. Creating this template is the job of the ITIC or Information Technology Industry Council, which works through their website. Business owners will also need the VPAT to develop an Accessibility Conformance Report or ACR. That said, VPAT does not need to be completely redone if there are accessibility issues that need correcting. VPAT also does not require (or demonstrate) complete accessibility, so you will want to be sure you cover all your bases.
The turnaround time of VPAT projects typically takes around a week more than an audit project done by an expert since the audit project itself is included in the VPAT process.
A VPAT is needed if you either have an agreement with a company that works for a government agency or if you work for a government agency expected to meet 508 compliance. Also, there is no required score for the VPAT to be tagged as compliant.
