Pentecost marked the birth of the Christian community empowered by the Spirit—what we recognize as the beginning of the Church. What message did Peter preach on this day? Acts 2:36
Jesus is LORD
When the crowd at Pentecost heard that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah, their hearts were deeply pierced—prompting a powerful response, as about 3,000 people turned to Him that very day. That call still stands today: to acknowledge Jesus as Lord.
To say, “Jesus is Lord” is to surrender the right to lead your own life and give Him full authority. True Lordship means letting Jesus call the shots—not out of obligation, but out of love and trust. It’s more than believing about Him; it’s choosing to follow Him, day by day.
Romans 10:9-13 - We must receive Jesus as Lord in order to be saved Luke 6:46-49 - True Lordship is shown in a life of ongoing obedience Matthew 7:21-27 - Calling Him Lord is putting His words into practice
What happened when the crowd realized Jesus is Lord? Acts 2:37 How did Peter answer their question? Acts 2:38-40 How do we know they responded? Acts 2:41
2. Turning to the LORD
Repentance Acts 2:38-40 Peter's first word to the crowd on Pentecost was, "Repent". Repentance is the starting point of salvation—a change of heart that turns us toward Jesus. But it's also a lifelong posture, a daily choice to keep saying 'Yes' to Him in every area of life.
Acts 3:17-19Repentance as a first step in salvation Mat 21:28-32 Repentance as an ongoing way of life Psa 119:57-61Repentance as a lifelong response to God, constantly turning to His way
Water Baptism Acts 2:38-41 When the crowd asked Peter, “What shall we do?” his first response was, “Repent and be baptized.” We know they responded positively because Acts 2:41 tells us that about 3,000 people accepted his message and were baptized that very day. Baptism was one of the first acts of obedience for these new followers of Jesus.
Act 8:26-38 What was the one requirement Philip gave the Ethiopian as to whether or not he could be baptized? Rom 6:3-12 We are "buried" with Christ in baptism, and "rise" from the water to walk in newness of life 1Co 10:1-4 The children of Israel escaping Egypt and passing through the Red Sea is a picture of baptism Matt 28:18-20 Jesus told us to make disciples by (1) Going, (2) Baptizing and (3) Teaching others to obey Him
The gift of the Holy SpiritActs 2:38-40 When the crowd asked Peter, “What shall we do?” his response wasto repent, be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
What is the promise of the Father, and what would happen when they were baptized in the Holy Spirit? Act 1:4-8
The Christian life isn’t just about believing something—it’s about entering into a new way of living with God and with others. These practices of time in the word, prayer and sharing in life together are invitations to grow, belong, and be transformed. Acts 2:42
5. Taught by the LORD
Acts 2:42 - “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching.” The apostles taught what Jesus had shown them, and today those truths live on in Scripture. A life devoted to God’s Word is the foundation for following Jesus and growing in Him.
Acts 2:42 - They devoted themselves "to the fellowship". Fellowship is a word that means a shared common participation. Fellowship is a shared relationship with God and one another 1Jn 1:3 2Co 13:14
Fellowship is participation in a shared mission Php 1:3-5 The Greek word for "fellowship " in this verse is the English word "partnership"
Fellowship is sacrificial sharing of resources Rom 15:26The Greek word for "fellowship " in this verse is the English word "contribution" Heb 13:16 The Greek word for "fellowship " in this verse is the English word "share" 3 Questions and 2 Next Steps
And to Sharing in Meals (including the Lord's supper) Acts 2:46
One time the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. This is what He told them. Mat 6:9-13 A simple way to remember this prayer is using the letter F as a reminder F = Father (in heaven, holy) F = Follow (His kingdom, His will being done in my life) F = Food (daily bread) F = Forgiveness (forgive my sin, and let me forgive those who sin against me) F = Freedom (lead us not into temptation, deliver us from the evil one) Prayer includes times of talking and times of listening to the LORD Jer 33:3- "Call to me and I will answer you" Joh 10:27 - "My sheep hear my voice" Psa 46:10 - "Be still and know that I am God"
The environment of that first church was alive with the presence and power of God. It was described as "a deep sense of awe". There were miraculous signs and wonders, extreme generosity that seems to be possible only when the LORD moves upon the heart, there were times of praise together in the temple, and as people were sharing what God was doing in their lives, the LORD was adding to their numbers day by dayActs 2:43-47
8. The Works of the LORD
Acts 2:43 ...and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
