According to the May 1987 edition of Cribbage World (page 11), ACC Grass Roots #43 was chartered in early 1987 as the "2121 Grass Roots Program" with Bo Atkinson as the club director. The club name came from where the club met at the time, the Elks Lodge #2121 in Fremont, CA. Soon after, the club became a nomadic group, finding restaurants to meet and play (Cattleman's Steakhouse in Newark, Marie Calendar's in the Fremont Hub, Pizza Italia in Fremont, various Roundtable Pizza's in Fremont and Newark and Bronco Billy's Pizza Parlor in Fremont to name a few). After Arlen Clendenning (then club director) passed away in February 1991 at the JPW/ACC Open in Reno, NV., club member Jay Waste suggested renaming the club "Clendenning's Clan". The club name changed again in 2013 when club member Ira Deutsch suggested honoring 96 year old club member Bob Christopher by renaming the club "Christopher's Crusaders".Â
