Definition
Sustainability is defined as practicing community-engaged research (CER) in a way that is sustainable holistically (not just ecologically, but relationally). Sustainability acknowledges the lasting effects and implications of research beyond the scope of the project period.
In Context
CER projects can open the door to the opportunity of future collaborations and work opportunities. One practical way to promote sustainability in your research includes incorporating community capacity building (e.g. research skills workshops and more), which can ensure that the community benefits far beyond the scope of just the project. Secondly, ensure that the community benefits from research outcomes, whether economically, socially or in other meaningful ways (this includes avoiding actions that could result in the overconsumption of funds meant primarily to benefit community members). Finally, providing future recommendations and/or suggestions in your final report can help point in the direction of longer-term actions and research that further the well-being of the community.
By prioritizing your research to build a better future for communities, rather than being driven solely by research incentives, you can ensure your research addresses issues faced by the community in a way that will have a long-term, positive impact on future generations.
CER and its outcomes can help preserve cultural history and heritage through various forms of documentation, whether through articles, paintings, or other forms of art. In their class panel, student alumni of last year’s ACAM 320 class shared how their work and relationships with their community partners (Sliced Mango Collective and Chinatown Today) lasted far beyond just the scope of their community projects. After their projects ended, they were invited back for further opportunities and events, and their deliverables/designs continue to be used by the organizations. This illustrates how a long-term relationship between students and communities transforms research from a one-time project into an ongoing process with lasting impact.
