ACAFS was founded as a non-profit in 1995. The basis for ACAFS stemmed from it's founders experience as court-appointed custody evaluators from 1987 to about 1992. During that time it was our observation that families were not getting any of the services they needed as they divorced and established a new family structure. This was especially true for families with complex circumstances: abuse claims, domestic violence, substance abuse, interference with parent time, etc.
In the early 90's there were very few organizations in the U.S. dedicated to the needs of children and families experiencing complex divorce. So ACAFS development occurred exclusively on the basis of clinical observation, research to learn of interventions, and creativity to apply research to practice. As programs and research has informed practices, ACAFS has continued to refine its services.
