HOW TO REPROGRAM THE MIND
All of us who have been committed to our self-knowledge and spiritual development for a long time sooner or later come to the same conclusion: the importance of knowing and understanding how the mind works. Hence, it is essential that we dedicate time to observe it carefully. Our mind has a conscious part (what we are aware of) and an unconscious part, also called “subconscious”. This is where everything we don't realize resides. That is to say, the set of unconscious beliefs and thoughts that so much condition our way of seeing and acting in the world. And since we generally live on automatic pilot, almost out of inertia, the quality of our subconscious determines the quality of our life. Metaphorically, our mind is “fertile soil” and thoughts are “seeds”. When we repeat ourselves frequently, certain thoughts end up germinating in the form of beliefs or "roots". From there certain emotions arise, which become the "shoots" from which certain attitudes, behaviors and decisions flourish in the form of "stems" and "leaves". Over time, these become habits, which determine the existential results we reap. That is, the "fruits".
WHERE DO OUR SUBCONSCIOUS THOUGHTS COME FROM? Regarding the creation of our belief system and, therefore, of our identity, human beings go through three stages, as described by the wise Gerardo Schmedling. The first is known as the "innocence" stage, which means "absence of information." All of us are born as a blank cassette, in which adults are recording and impregnating their belief system. Our way of thinking is not ours. Not surprisingly, during our childhood we indiscriminately believe all the messages coming from society in general and from our parents in particular. We believe it because we are innocent: we have no reference with which to compare or question in a skeptical way the information that comes to us from abroad. Through these second-hand beliefs we are going to create our personality. That is, our false concept of identity: the ego. Being defenseless children, we cannot protect ourselves from the powerful influence that others exert on us. Through mirror neurons, from a very young age we begin to absorb and imitate the way of thinking and behaving of the adults around us. And since we lack criteria, common sense and critical thinking, we never ask ourselves if what we absorb is really what we should absorb. The second stage in the process of building our identity is called "ignorance", which means "false information" and will begin during puberty. Once our belief system has been formed, we begin to think and behave based on the programming with which we have been indoctrinated. And since this conditioning is made up of limiting and mistaken beliefs, we feel deeply insecure, self-conscious and confused, which causes our first great existential crisis. By repeating to ourselves over and over again certain messages and ideas heard in our childhood about what we have to be, do and have in order to be accepted as normal individuals by society, we finally end up becoming what we think we are. And the truth is that many of us remain anchored in this phase of ignorance for the rest of our lives, which is characterized by self-centeredness, reactivity, conflict, suffering, victimhood, and the desire to blame. Since changing beliefs implies removing very deep pillars of our psyche, some of us do not change the internalized information again at the age of 18. Although we all go through the stage of innocence and ignorance, the third phase is optional. It is known as “wisdom”, which means “true information”. In essence, it consists of handling information verified through our experience to know how to reap satisfactory results in the different dimensions and areas of our life in a conscious and voluntary way. This stage begins the day we commit to look in the mirror and do two great lessons: first, question the beliefs with which we were educated as children. And secondly, reprogram our mind with wisdom information. Only then can we "clean" our subconscious, so full of false and limiting beliefs. This is how we start the exciting journey of going beyond the ego to reconnect with our true essence.
