I have already completed my project, but you are still welcome to use the links below to find out more about period poverty and how to support those in need!
According to bustle.com, period poverty is "the inability to access menstrual products like tampons or pads."
According to globalcitizen.org, "period poverty [on a global scale] is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and, or, waste management."
When selecting a project for my Girl Scout Gold Award, I wanted to choose a project that was a little bit outside of the box and I wanted to help spread awareness about an issue that most people are not aware of. This cause is really important because one in four menstruators have struggled with period poverty at some point in their life. Period products are something most of us take for granted each month, but some menstruators don't share that same luxury.
I have been on the Hope Supply Co. Student Board for the last four years, and for this year, I am the board's co-president. As a member of the board, I am very passionate about supporting Hope Supply. Hope Supply is most known for their diaper distribution, but I wanted to raise awareness about their efforts to #EndPeriodPoverty as well.
For my project, I will be making "period packs" that include:
pads
deodorant
toothbrush
toothpaste
shampoo
conditioner
body wash
handwritten greeting cards
homemade heating pad
Period packs donated to Hope Supply Co. will then be distributed to their partner agencies that support menstruators:
homeless & domestic violence shelters
pantries that support the general public
refugee centers
