I am hoping that students feel very invited when viewing the syllabus. I included a lot of language of support in the document. In the syllabus, I included images of local scenery such as Yuba River, Lake Tahoe, and Castle Peak in hopes that student will recognize these locations and feel at home.
Although the screen shot cannot show this, this course card includes a .gif instead of a still image! I hope the .gif files make the course even more inviting! I use this in my physiology course card. I am hoping that students notice the skin color or gender is not identified, meaning everyone is welcome. I am also hoping the LGBTQ+ community notice the rainbow of colors welcoming them to the class!
I am hope student feel welcomed when they visit the homepage. I tried to keep the look very minimal to prevent overloading students right from the start. I have a welcome video for the students to say hello and to tell them where to go to get started.
I will be using this assignment as a "first day participation" requirement in my physiology class. This will allow students to start the class on a low-risk, more relaxed assignment. I have included eleven open ended questions which include:
In one word, describe how you are feeling about this class.
This response will help me know who to reach out and encourage more than others.
What is the one thing that is most likely to interfere with your success in this class?
This response will hopefully guide me in who to reach out to more often. If someone says they are working full time and have children, I am more likely to reach out to ask how they are doing or how their family is doing.
For my other classes that do not have a science pre-requisite, such as anatomy and microbiology, I will likely include other questions such as have you taken a college level science class within the last five years?
This icebreaker allows the students to show their classmates and instructor anything that means something to them. They have the choice to show a painting, a drawing, a pet or anything that means something to them. I show the students my cat Albus. I hope that showing pets is a pretty easy way to connect to students and foster belonging to the group.
This assignment asks the students to look at their learning journey. They are asked to offer advice to future students which forces them to think about their learning process. Students comment on how they felt at the beginning and how they have improved. For incoming students, this is a fantastic start to a semester where they hear from experienced students. This assignment enforces the growth mindset for all students - so fantastic!
This video is placed in the course orientation Modules in Canvas. The course packet is an essential piece of learning material in the course. The course packet includes lecture notes, lab notes, study guide questions, practice exam questions and our lab handouts. Students learn where to buy the course packet and how to use it for the semester.
This video is placed in the course as an additional resource for learning about the cell cycle. I have always used storytelling and humor in my lectures on campus, so I continued to keep that in this cell cycle review. The CLOs met by teaching this information includes: Identify the functions of the human organ systems and describe the physiological mechanisms underlying their operation from the chemical through system levels of organization.
