Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay is a Professor of Economics at the Economics and Planning Unit, Indian Statistical Institute- an Institution of National Importance funded by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI, Govt of India).
Abhiroop works in the area of education and health in the context of India. He uses econometrics and experimental design- both natural experiments as well as Randomized-Control-Trial field experiments to explore the link between innovative pedagogies, school access and mother’s bargaining power within households on human capital outcomes-both cognitive as well as non-cognitive dimensions of education. He also works on the macro-dimensions of human capital -growth linkage. His work in health focusses on household impacts of life threatening diseases like AIDS and Cancer as well as issues related to the health of the elderly from Non Communicable Diseases like Hypertension. Abhiroop has also contributed to issues in public policy- on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in India as well as issues related to efficiency and equity of the public education and health systems-designing rules for the spatial distribution of public teachers and doctors. His work has been published in reputed journals like The Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, World Development, Social Science and Medicine and the Journal of Quantitative Economics to name a few. He was, till recently, an editorial board member of PLOS ONE.
Abhiroop is an alumnus of Kirorimal College (University of Delhi), Delhi School of Economics (University of Delhi) and received his Ph.D. in economics from The Pennsylvania State University (USA). He was a Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland dissertation fellow, a Hermes post-doctoral CNRS fellow at GREQAM (France), the Sir Ratan Tata Senior fellow at Institute of Economic Growth (Delhi) and a visiting scholar at Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick. He is currently a research fellow at The institute for Study of Labor (IZA), Global Labor Organization (GLO) and Global Action for Policy Initiative (GAP)- Northeastern University, an associated researcher of Centre de Sciences Humaines-CSH (CNRS) and an invited researcher of JPAL. He is also the recipient of the Mahalannobis Gold Medal given by The Indian Econometric Society in 2018.
Abhiroop is currently a member of various government of India committees- VCEA (Vaccine Cost Effectiveness Analysis) Working Group-NIFHW and Technical Advisory Group (TAG), Household Surveys, National Sample Survey. He was a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare nominee on the executive council of the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS)-2019-2024 and is currently a board member of the NGO Leher that works on child rights.
