Introduction
ABCC11 is a gene which encodes for the ABCC11 protein, which is a part of the family of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Transporter proteins move molecules across the membranes in and between cells. ABCC11 is a part of the MRP (multi-drug resistance) subfamily, which is involved in processes such as bile acids, conjugated steroids, etc. [2] In particular, the ABCC11 gene is involved the determining presence of underarm osmidrosis and human earwax type. Additionally, the gene has also been looked at as a breast cancer risk indicator.
Transcription factors are proteins which play an integral part in a transcribing DNA into RNA. Much of the time, they aid in transcription of DNA by binding to the promoter region of DNA and help signal the start of transcription. With this project, I wanted to look at transcription factors specific to the ABCC11 gene and analyze how they affected the gene's regulation and expression of the ABCC11 protein.
