This visualization allows users to explore data from over 1200 Hollywood movies from 2008 to 2016. Based on the various data collected, this interactive visualization helps users view and compare statistics about major Hollywood movies that otherwise would have been impossible to access in one place. This is a tool that can be used by movie enthusiasts and/or researchers to compare statistics that will allow them to draw conclusions about major films and access vast amount of information all in one click.
The concept and design was credited to David McCandless. The research was done by Stephanie Smith, Pearl Doughty, Ella Hollowood and the code by Tom Evans and Neil Muralee.
In this critique, we will take a look at the different features of this visualization and see what works and what improvements could be made.
The data for this visualization was taken from various sources:
All the data used for The Hollywood In$ider was retrieved on December 31st, 2016. Under the visualization, it clearly states that some of the budgets for some of the movies were estimated. However, it does not mention on how these estimations were calculated.
This visualization is an interactive surface that allows user to pick and choose what they would like to display on the screen. All the data(the movies) are displayed as different sized and colored bubbles on a plot graph with user's choice of axis.
This visualization plots movies on the graph based on various statistics. A user can change the x axis as well as the y axis and choose to compare movies based on the following:
In addition, a user can select the year from 2008 to 2016 they would like to view the movies for or choose to view all the movies together.
The size of the bubble which represents each movie can depend on three things: Budget, Worldwide Gross and Opening Weekend.
Furthermore, a user can choose to view movies based on: Script Type, Genre, and Oscar Winners.
Based on the "Colour" chosen, user can click on Legend to see how the movies are differentiated based on the color of the bubble.
Or, user can view Legend and click on what they would like to see displayed on the graph. Only one legend can be viewed at a time.
Hovering over a bubble allows user to view multiple statistics about a movie in one place, and clicking on a bubble redirects to Amazon.com which provides with various ways to watch the selected movie.
The Hollywood In$ider is an excellent visualization that fulfills it intention of allowing user to explore many different statistics about a movie, as well as compare them with other movies.
