Lydia Goble LaGue
(Chapter/Board Member since 2024) A native Texan, Lydia retired and moved to Frederick in 2019 to be near her son, daughter-in-law and grandchild, having lived and worked the previous 30 years in Milwaukee, WI. “DiDi” now has three grands, (two here, one in NJ). Her other four children live with their spouses/partners in CO, PA, and NJ, whom she loves to visit, along with her four siblings, their families, and long-time friends in her hometown of Houston, TX. Lydia has worked behind the scenes in theatre and dance as a production/stage manager in addition to various administrative positions in business and educational institutions, most recently as office manager at UW-Milwaukee’s Center for Aging & Translational Research.
Karen Smith
Karen was born in New Jersey and lived there until 2000. In 2000, she relocated to Frederick with her family due to her husband’s job relocation. Karen had a forty year career in education. Once she moved to Frederick, she became a teacher at St. John Regional Catholic School. Then, in 2005, she became the school principal. Karen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Technology from William Paterson University in NJ. She also has an advanced degree in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University. She has also worked closely with student interns from Mt. St. Mary’s University. Karen retired in 2020. She enjoys traveling, needlework, and reading in her spare time. She has also worked as a volunteer with the national AARP organization and is happy to now be able to volunteer with the Frederick Chapter.
Debora Pinkney
(Chapter/Board Member since 2018) Debora joined the Chapter in 2018 and a week later became Secretary for the AARP Chapter 636. Debora was born and raised in Upper Marlboro, MD and moved to Frederick in 2017. She has one daughter and three grandchildren. Debora retired from the Federal Government with 33 ½ years of service, including as Information Technology Specialist. In addition, Debora is a former member of the Frederick County Promenaders and currently serves as a Vice President of the Mt. Pleasant Ruritan Club and a board member the Linton of Ballenger Creek Condo Association.
Sarah Gastley
(Chapter member one year; Board 1st Term) Sarah has lived in the Middletown/Frederick community most of her life. She was widowed in 2022 after 61 years of marriage. Sarah has one son, three grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, who fill her life with happiness. Her past career includes fifteen years in local business and 25 years in the Federal Government as Manager of Quality Assurance for the Army Medical Department. Currently, Sarah serves as the Administrator/Accountant for New Hope Fellowship Church of God. She received her Pastor's license in 2011 and is involved with teaching, Bible study and counseling to our local community.
Jan Dinterman, Tim Dinterman
(Chapter members since 2004, Board member: Jan 8 terms, Tim two years.) Jan and Tim are quite the team! You will recognize Jan from the luncheons as the one in “seasonal attire,” introducing new members. Tim will also be familiar to those who brought items for our holiday collections benefitting Citizens Rehab and the Frederick Food Bank.
Tim received his Bachelor’s from Towson University and his Master’s from McDaniel College, both in Mathematics, a subject he taught for 34 ½ years at Governor Thomas Johnson Middle and High Schools. Jan received her Bachelor’s from Towson University and her Master’s in Reading from Hood College. She also taught in FCPS, for 30 years, the first eighteen as third grade teacher at Sabillasville Elementary School, then twelve years as a reading specialist at Carole Manor Elementary School.
Lifelong residents of Frederick County, the Dintermans reside in Walkersville and have two children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. They are active in the United Church of Christ (UCC), Frederick Kiwanis, and the Frederick Elks.
Gary Hays
(Chapter member 15 years, Board member since 2019) Gary stepped up to the plate to serve as President when Chapter #636 reconvened after being shut down during Covid.
Gary received his Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from American University. In 1976, he joined the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, where he met his wife, Maggi, who had already been working there for two years. Gary rose to the rank of Captain, a post he held for 25 years, retiring in 2001.
Maggi and Gary are residents of Frederick County, where they raised their blended family of five children. Upon retirement the couple pursued various local civic activities. For Gary, that included serving for eight years on the Frederick County Board of Elections. Gary is also an avid collector of various Christmas decorations, which he proudly displays every year.
Ronnie Osterman
(Chapter member nineyears; Board member 2nd Term) A native of Washington, D.C., Ronnie has lived in Frederick, MD for the past 40 years and loves it!
She is retired from the Department of the Army. Since 1988, Ronnie has volunteered for many city and non-profit organizations. From March 1986 to December 2014 (almost 29 years), Ronnie and several others ran a very successful singles group in Frederick called Frederick Singles.
However, her biggest joy is her family which consists of two daughters, two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, and, finally a boy, her great-grandson, who was born in April. 2024.
Nancy Marron
(Chapter member 20 years, Board member since 2023.) Originally from western PA, Nancy graduated from St. Francis Hospital School in 1963 and later obtained her BSN from UMBC in 1991. She worked briefly as an RN prior to having children. Later, after moving to Frederick in 1977, she enrolled in FCC to update her nursing skills. She returned to nursing at Frederick Memorial Hospital, working in various Medical Surgical Departments.
She eventually felt called to become a Hospice nurse, which she did until retiring in 2002 as Head Nurse with Hospice of Frederick County.
She and husband, Ted (also a member and recent Interim Treasurer), recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. They have four sons, two daughters-in-law, four grandsons and one granddaughter.
She has been active in her church for many years. They moved to Homewood in 2014, where she volunteers and is a member of their Noteables Choral Group and RetiredNurses at Homewood. As the Chapter #636 Health & Welfare Chair, Nancy invites you to let her know of any members who might appreciate a Get Well or Sympathy card.
Paula Blundell
(Chapter member since 2005, Board member 8 years, including stints as VP and Secretary) Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Paula graduated from college in Virginia and moved to Frederick in 1976 from Gaithersburg, Maryland. She began teaching with FCPS in 1979 as a substitute teacher at Rock Creek School and then as the Life Skills teacher for 14 years. She transferred to Frederick High in 1994 to teach Special Education for 10 years and retired after 26 years from teaching to substitute at the Career Technology Center for another 17 years.
Both of her children work for FCPS: daughter Karyn teaches at Oakdale Elementary School and son Scott is the Director of Security and Emergency Management.
Paula volunteers for her church, Frederick Health Hospital, and Retired Teachers Association, and enjoys spending as much time as possible with family and traveling with friends.
Patti Patterson
(Chapter member since early 2000’s; Board member 10+ years) Anyone who has attended a chapter luncheon will recognize Patti, who has diligently served the chapter for over fifteen years as Luncheon Reservations Coordinator - No small feat!
She has lived all her life in Frederick County, as did her parents. She earned a master’s equivalency degree and taught elementary school music for 34 years in Frederick County Public Schools.
A widow, Patti has two children, five grandchildren, and one great grandson. She is active in her church, most notably as a member of its choir and handbells groups.
Maggi Hays
(Chapter member 15 years, Board member since 2012, including President 2012-2015) Maggi was raised at West Point where her Army Officer father taught in the Academy’s language department. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Mt. St. Mary’s and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Hood College. Maggi served as the first female Deputy Sheriff for Montgomery County for 20 years, before retiring in 1993.
Maggi and Gary are residents of Frederick County, where they raised their blended family of five children. Upon retirement the couple pursued various local civic activities.
April Danner
(Chapter member since November 2023, 1st Term Board Member) April D Danner was born and raised in Frederick, MD, and has lived in San Francisco, Houston, and St Petersburg. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1968, and has completed AA degrees from Frederick County Community College in Human Services and Microsoft Office Systems Management. She is currently just 3 classes away from completing another one in Addictions Counseling.
April worked for many years as Food Service Supervisor at Frederick Memorial Hospital, and later as Food Service Director at Citizens Nursing Home, the same facility for which our chapter provides Bingo support. She is 75 years old, has one adult child, Tara, 2 grandsons, one granddaughter, and a 15-year-old great-granddaughter.
April’s hobbies include listening to live music and dancing; playing cards, board games, and Bunco with friends; going to teas with The Red Hat Society; and helping others as may be needed.
She is a member of The American Legion Post 11, The Elk’s Lodge #684, and The Owl’s Lodge of Frederick.
April is looking forward to helping our Chapter #636 as a board member to focus on increasing our membership and communications between senior citizens and Frederick County resources.
Norma Davis
(Chapter member one year) Norma is a lifelong resident of Frederick County and lives on the same road where she was raised. She attended Frederick County Public Schools and earned her AA degree from Frederick County Community College. Now retired, she was employed at Costco and for many years on staff with FCPS, where she also served for 10 years as President of Frederick County Association of School Support Employees (FASSE). She is a Notary Public; an Eastern Star; a member of AmVets, American Legion, and Elks Club; maintains an extensive garden and raises free range chickens. She is a member of FCF Church, has been involved with various volunteer efforts, and enjoys playing cards, pickleball, and bowling.
Norma has two grown children, a son who lives in the area and a daughter who lives in Wisconsin. A member of AARP for 10 years, she joined Chapter 636 last year and looks forward to seeing our local chapter grow.
Linda Jenkins
(Chapter member since 2000, Board member 2001-2020, travel planner/escort 2001-2020, when Covid shut us down)
Linda was born and raised east of Frederick City (near Spring Ridge). She graduated from Frederick High School in 1965, Frostburg State University in 1969, and from Hood College in 1971. She began her 30-year teaching career at Brunswick Elementary School and after two years transferred to Yellow Springs Elementary for the next eight years. Her last assignment was at Valley Elementary School in Jefferson from which, after 20 years of loving her job there, she retired. Linda and her husband, Denny, have two children: Ryan (2 grandchildren) and Marcie, both of whom now live in VA . Linda's parents (Chester and Nellie) were also members of Chapter 636 and enjoyed traveling with her (Nellie was such a hoot! Nellie passed away in 2023, but her dad is still going strong at 99 y/o and is her priority in life today.
Linda misses bowling since our city closed Terrace Lanes, but spends a lot of time with Bells and vocal choir at Mount Carmel UMC.

Tom Slater
(Long-time Chapter member, recently rejoined after lapse)Tom Slater was born in Montgomery County and moved to Frederick with wife, Anne, in 1966 where they started teaching for Frederick County Public Schools. They also taught at Frederick Community College, Anne for over 30 years, and Tom as an adjunct instructor in US History and State and Local Government. Tom graduated from Frostburg State College and obtained an M.A. in history from The George Washington University. His thesis was entitled “Frederick County Politics 1950-1970: A Study in Rural Conservatism.” After obtaining his law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1981, he commenced the practice of law in Frederick County until he retired, after 42 years, in 2024.
Active in politics since moving to Frederick, Tom has been elected 8 times to the Democratic State Central Committee for Frederick County and has attended 14 Democratic national conventions, was an elector in the 2024 election, and is the current chair of the Western Maryland Democratic PAC. He is a past president of the Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association and is currently chair of the Maryland Retired School Personnel Association’s legislative committee.
An avid historian, Tom is conducting research on the political history of Frederick County and the Maryland Democratic Party since World War II with the expectation of writing on those subjects. For many years he served as Historian for both the Frederick County Bar Association and the Frederick County Democratic Party. He enjoys golf, the Orioles, reading biographies and histories, theatre, and travel. He is the father of three children and the grandfather of seven. Anne passed away in October 2024 after 58 years of marriage.
