From a very young age, I developed a passion for helping people in my community. Through my service in the Boy Scouts of America and commitment to Christ, I have always placed the needs of others before myself. Combined with a passion for the sciences and service to others, I graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana in May of 2010 and pursued an education in the field of pharmacy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s School of Pharmacy (ULM) where I graduated with my Doctor of Pharmacy degree in May of 2017. Through my education, I transformed my passion of helping others into a passion of patient care. After graduating from ULM, I pursued post-graduate training specializing in primary/ ambulatory care at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences – Northwest Campus (UAMS-NW) in Fayetteville, Arkansas to further cultivate my skills in providing patient care.
In addition to my passion of helping others, I have always had a fervor for teaching and educating. Whether it was in the recital hall where I would help my violin section stand partner, on the field coaching or driving my lacrosse team toward the goal, or in the classroom tutoring my peers in the various sciences and histories, I have always sought out an opportunity to teach others.
While at UAMS-NW, I enrolled in the UAMS College of Pharmacy Teaching Certificate program. Prior to this experience, I had given guest lectureships to Bossier Parish Community College on pharmacy practice topics and to C.E. Byrd High School on different aspects of military history. I have also tutored for ULM’s student success center in basic science courses ranging from general chemistry to genetics and biochemistry, and I was a supplemental instruction leader for a general biology course. While in pharmacy school, I held regular weekly tutoring sessions for study groups and other classmates that were struggling in topics ranging from medicinal chemistry to pharmacotherapy modules. Outside of the classroom, I was a leader and educator both on and off the field serving as team captain for ULM’s inaugural club lacrosse team, and a middle school/ JV coach for Shreveport’s traveling lacrosse club, the Red River Mudbugs. During my final year of pharmacy school, I was exposed to pharmacy classroom teaching by taking an academia pharmacy practice experience under the leadership of Dr. Roxie Stewart, PharmD. I was given the opportunity to teach 1st year pharmacy students (P1) in their calculations course as well as lead multiple weekly lab sessions for P1s on various topics of their didactic lab experience.
The Teaching Certificate Program at UAMS provided numerous opportunities to expound on my skills as an educator. The course offered a variety of opportunities to teach pharmacy students, pharmacists, medical students, attending physicians, medical residents, pharmacy residents, and patients in a variety of different settings from 1-on-1 to large group audiences. This teaching portfolio contains the collective materials created and presented to the aforementioned learners.
I will continue to build on the teaching and pharmacy practice principles I have gained throughout my life and through the Teaching Certificate Program as I move out into the community pharmacy work force where I am currently employed. The love for building and making relationships, delivering high quality healthcare to patients, and commitment to being a life-long learner remain paramount in the arsenal of qualities that have made and continue to develop me into the pharmacy practitioner that I am today.
