Project Overview
The Product
My app concept is about a Fitness Coaching Service for individuals who are new to technology, as this will benefit people for social good.
Project Duration
3 Months
Jul 2022 - Sep 2022
The Problem
Based on my user research, the two most common problems that users experience in a fitness app are subscription plans being too costly and the user interface being too difficult to navigate.
The Goal
To design an app that not only helps people looking to live and lead a healthier and clean lifestyle but also for the social good of society. The results from offering this opportunity to users will help them to maximize their well-being.
Roles
UX Designer.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities that I had to do throughout my design journey included: conducting unmoderated usability studies, designing paper and digital wireframes, high-fidelity designs, user personas, and user surveys.
User Research: Summary
In order to address the various user needs and complaints that they’ve had from experiencing my app design, I’ve been conducting several usability study interviews in order to understand my user group at a deeper level. By ensuring that I’ve got a strong understanding of my users, this will help me to see what they’re most frustrated about so that their issues can be resolved.
My initial objective when starting out this project was to figure out a way in which a user is able to easily search and navigate for a workout of their choice without struggle and also to find customized workouts which are better suited to their specific needs/requirements.
User Personas
Problem Statement: Samson is a student who needs a well-developed fitness app that suits his intended goals because he wants to live a happy and healthier lifestyle.
Problem Statement: Barbara is a student who needs her own individualized weekly exercise schedule to follow on a regular basis because she wants to tone her body to look good for the summer.
Competitive Audit
Ideation
I performed a quick ideation exercise to brainstorm ideas for how to address the gaps identified from the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on simple navigation and affordable subscription plans.
Digital Wireframes
Following my paper wireframes, I continued to design my app’s home screen digitally in order to make them look more visually appealing.
Low-Fidelity Prototype
After designing and placing all of my digital wireframes together, I created a low-fidelity prototype which demonstrates the user flow of my app. The prototype will allow for users to navigate with ease.
Usability Study: Parameters
Study Type: Unmoderated usability study
Location: Thailand, remote
Participants: 5 participants
Length: 15-30 minutes
Usability Study: Findings
These were the main findings uncovered from the usability study:
1) Costly Membership: Initially, users found the subscription plans to be too expensive so I’ve reduced it to make it more affordable.
2) Personalized Workouts: Users thought the idea of being able to have workouts personalized to their own needs makes the overall experience more authentic.
3) No Microphone Icon: Users noticed that the search bar didn’t have a microphone icon, but thinks that it should be implemented in order to increase user accessibility.
Mockups
The previous digital wireframe helped to give me an idea for how to refine the designs further for my high-fidelity mockups. Since the screen is refined, it’s also much easier for users to navigate and find what they’re looking for.
The initial designs of the app were confusing to users but after taking the time to refine the designs, they turned out to be more straightforward and easy to understand in terms of navigation.
High-Fidelity Prototype
The high-fidelity prototype allows users to access the full completed design and user flow of the app. Issues mentioned previously in the usability study have been resolved and refined for the final design.
Accessibility Considerations
1) Implement a microphone feature within the search bar to help users search easier and more conveniently.
2) Reduce the price of subscription plans so that users will be able to afford the useful features of a fitness service.
3) Implement personalized workout plans for users based on their specific requirements or needs.
Sitemap
With the app designs already done, I began working on my responsive website screens. I created a sitemap to help with the direction of my screen’s design to ensure users move through a main user flow that makes sense.
Responsive Designs
The screen variations I’ve designed for includes: mobile website, tablet, and desktop. All of the screens have been optimized to fit specific user needs of each device and it’s varying screen sizes.
Going Forward & Conclusion
Impact: I thought that my Fitness Coaching Service had a significant impact on the people of society because it was for social good. Throughout my design and research journey, I noticed that my users didn’t struggle with navigating the design and found it easy to use.
What I Learned: At the beginning of my design process, I learnt that designing paper wireframes was a necessary first step before any other design improvements can be made. As usual, the usability studies always helps to gain a deeper understanding of what my users are facing and what exactly needs improving or fixing.
Next Steps
1) Conduct further unmoderated usability studies to gain more insights into the issues that could be related to my design.
2) Conduct more user research to discover if user needs are fulfilled or not.
3) Hand over my project to the development team in order to launch the product.
