We first met back in 2016 and from the first few dates we had together, we knew we wanted to have a family. Family is extremely important to both of us. We both have two siblings that live nearby and we spend our weekends visiting family in the suburbs of NYC.
We got married in 2022 and soon after began our adoption journey. At the time, Aaron was a teacher and Horacio was in Medical School. We had been to a MHB conference just to learn about family building and left feeling like surrogacy in the States was just completely out of reach for us.
We interviewed several adoption agencies and found one that we felt good about. They felt ethical and well established in the field. We attended the trainings, filled out the paperwork, paid our fees and signed on with the agency. Several months later, we got a call that we had been matched. We met birth mother and baby but long story short, it fell apart. Another year went by and we had been matched again. This time, we felt uncomfortable with the situation and we backed out.
Ultimately, we decided that newborn adoption with this agency was not the path we wanted to pursue any longer. We did not want to start all over again with adoption with a different agency because you have to do all of the trainings, sign new paperwork and pay new fees. Nothing transfers. At this point, we were tired, frustrated and feeling like we didn't have a true path forward.
We attended another MHB conference in Atlanta as a last ditch effort to see if there was way we could pursue surrogacy. There, we heard someone as a question about surrogacy in Mexico. The conference organizers were pretty dismissive of the idea but the doctors on the panel said it was safe and legal. We were curious but skeptical of the idea of doing a journey in another country.
We researched immensely and learned that Miracle Surrogacy was safe, affordable and fit our timeline. We felt they had ethical practices and a community of people to connect with. We connected with some of the other couples through the facebook group that had successful journeys with Miracle. We still talk with those couples today and we will forever be thankful for their friendship.
We called Miracle and had many questions for them. At this point Horacio was entering into his residency so he was able to ask very specific medical questions about the process, facilities and medical practices in Mexico. We got all of our questions answered with peer reviewed articles to support the medical decisions being made. We felt really comfortable with Miracle and made the decision to sign on.
The rest is outlined in our timeline below.
Starting this process was overwhelming. We couldn’t always trust the agencies we were interviewing; it felt like everyone had an angle or wanted something from us.
Early on, we came across Gays With Kids through their YouTube videos. Seeing gay men represented as real parents was incredibly validating. From there, we explored their website and eventually joined the GWK Academy.
We connected with Brian, the founder, and quickly felt he was truly in our corner. Throughout our journey—with all its ups and downs—Brian has been a steady, supportive presence. He’s spent hours on the phone with us when we needed guidance, and he’s answered every question with patience and honesty.
The Academy itself gave us a clear starting point: it taught us what to look for on agency websites, how to frame responsible questions, and how to identify reputable organizations. We referenced its resources constantly.
Beyond the program, Brian’s personal wisdom has been invaluable in navigating this tricky process. Words can’t fully capture how grateful we are for him and for GWK. If you’re looking for a starting point, guidance, or simply want to learn more about what GWK offers, we wholeheartedly encourage you to check them out.

We always welcome (and will be SUPER grateful!) if you want to get something off the registry for Lila! ;) But we also wanted to share because we found it useful to view other registries. Ultimately, you'll do what works best for you and your baby. Some may find they need far more than we did and some may find they need way less than we did.
Here's our actual Amazon registry and Babylist registry

Baby safe soap
Cotton blanket/swaddles
Baby books (in English)

Bottles/pacifiers
High contrast baby toys
Car seat and car base insert
Baby carrier (but we didn't need this since it is only for babies over 8lbs)
Travel size/samples of lotions and soaps (we didn't need too much)
Items we forgot, needed and had to buy:
More hats - it was cold in the hospital
More cotton towels for bath time
Infant cotton washcloths
Travel bottle brush clean and dry set
Rectal thermometer
We didn't forget these items, but had to bring more to the hospital at random times during our baby's standard 48 hour stay. So... in your diaper bag to leave at the hospital, just pack a lot of: newborn diapers, formula, outfits, socks, hats
When we went down for the deposit, we tried to choose a place that was near the clinic and would also be nice for when we got to go back down for the baby. We chose to stay in a neighborhood very close to the clinic and hospital where the baby will be born. The apartment complex is beautiful, safe and close to lots of shopping. It was on the more expensive side but it was extremely spacious and private.
For us, we prioritized a second bedroom for visitors, full kitchen, pool, gym, private and it have to have security. We really wanted laundry in unit, which we actually thought this unit had originally. I would recommend having it if you can.
We did not have it but it worked out fine with the laundry service located directly below the Walmart Express. It was really affordable and they used our baby safe detergent. There was something nice about having laundry washed and folded in a few hours for about $6 USD.
We truly did not know what to expect from the clinic. We were pleasantly surprised. Someone from Miracle met us at the clinic when we arrived. Everything was clean and everyone was professional. We felt really comfortable and welcomed. It was a wonderful start to the journey!
The neighborhood was beautiful. There was plenty of shopping and the streets were walkable. As someone from New York, it just felt like a neighborhood in Florida. We chose to rent a car since it was very affordable (~$90 a week) and we figured out where all of the stores were that we needed. We did most of our shopping at the large Walmart (not express Walmart), Costco and Chedraui Selecto (the best grocery store ever). Everything was within a 10 minute drive. We were really thankful we had the car to get out of the apartment. I will say driving felt a little crazy at times so you have to be a comfortable and confident driver to manage.
There were sidewalks everywhere, however, many were broken and uneven so not great for stroller strolls. It was also super hot and muggy during our stay here so we didn't want to be outside with baby for long.
Some of our favorites and what we got there:
-Walmart: Baby formula, Pack and play/crib, baby safe water,
-Chedraui: Groceries for the apartment, a baby bath tub, diapers, wipes, water, baby detergent
-Costco: We went to Costco at the beginning of our stay to get groceries we knew we'd use a lot of - cereal, water, frozen pizzas, milk
Some items we bought locally and we are thankful we did:
MAS baby safe detergent ~$10 USD
Pack and Play/Crib/Changing area. On sale for ~$45 USD
Formula we used to start. Usually around ~$25 USD
New-born bath. We laid a cotton towel over it and used a cotton towel to wash. ~$7 USD
We went for runs around the neighborhood and took turns watching the baby/had grandmas come visit to help. Here are some of our favorite little spots:
Walks
in
our
neighborhood
The hospital was really nice and the nurses and doctors were exceptional. They were really great at communicating and even filmed the birth and sent it to us. They showed us how to do all the baby things (burp, feed, swaddle) in the hospital. The facilities themselves were modern, spacious and clean.
The room where we visited withour surrogate was spacious, comfortable and private. The nurses repeatidly checked in with us to see if we needed anything.
Just a note to be mindful of - it's standard procedure for baby to stay in hospital for at least 48 hours. So we didn't get to take our daughter home until the 28th even though she was born on 26th. During that time, the nurses monitor baby and take excellent care of them.
There are a lot of different options to choose from depending on what you want.
- Plaza Las Americas - close to the hospital and downtown. Practical and has an amazing grocery store. Also Del Sol has many newborn items! The most practical place to shop that you'll want to spend most of your time at
-Marina Puerto Cancun - much nicer outdoor shopping center on the water. Nice for walking around in open air with your newborn!
La Isla Cancun - Really fancy tourist type of shopping. We liked visiting but we didn't spend much time. All American creature comforts here.
Costco - Just remember to bring your costco ID physical card. The phone ID will not work.
Overall - most of what you are looking for, you can find. You just have to know where to look some of the time.
They do have many of the products that you will need in Cancun depending on how specific of a shopper you are. We really wanted a specific brand of organic cotton clothes, towels and burp clothes - so we brought those. We also wanted specific bottles, our stroller/car seat and pacifiers. We brought all of that and bought the rest here.
We tried to bring as little as possible to avoid paying any taxes at the airport in Cancun. They are known to stop you and charge you if you have new items (remove tags off everything!). Upon arrival to Cancun, I did get stopped in the airport since I was carrying the car seat but thankfully they didn't give me any issues.
We asked our airbnb host to have a pack n play set up for us upon arrive. We ended up buying a pack and play that happened to be on sale at Walmart that served as Lila's first crib. We just wanted something fresh and new that hadn't been used by who knows how many other guests. It worked out great and doubled as a changing station! Our airbnb came with one but when we got here and saw it, we immediately knew we were not putting our daughter in it. So we went out and bought one.
We tried to eat at home as frequently as possible to keep costs down but did find some really good restaurants during our time here.
Some of our favorite spots:
- Super Salads Nichupté AMAZING salads and fresh sandwiches
-Cafe Nader Nichupte - good classic diner style meals
-Marakame Cancun - (photographed) delicious food and beautiful (open air) restaurant
- Level UP Cafe & Smoothies - great fresh yogurts, shakes and other breakfast options
We chose to rent a car and chose to hire a van service through Miracle to bring us back and forth to Merida. It was pricey for sure but it was worth it so we didn't have to fine tune those details ourselves. Miracle offered a shuttle from the airport which was extremely nice. If you are arriving to the airport, make sure you book your shuttle or car ahead of time. There is no uber allowed at the airport (and they take it VERY seriously...we tried, trust me) and the shuttles there will charge you a lot more than if you book in advance.
We flew down with the stroller and car seat. Horacio and I flew down seperately so Aaron took the car seat in a travel safe bag and Horacio took the stroller in the travel safe bag. We didn't have any issues checking them on the way down (we flew United/Jet Blue). Flying back was even easier - also on United.
We chose to use the van service Miracle suggested. It came to about $700. They picked us up at our apartment in Cancun and then picked our surrogate up and we made the 5ish hour drive to Merida. We stopped along the way to get some food.
We booked a hotel in Merida for us and our surrogate. It was about 15 minutes from the embassy and our hotel provided a free shuttle. Worth noting, the van service from Miracle will bring you to Merida but will not bring you to the embassy or pick you up from the embassy. Plan to take an uber.
The Embassy, for us, was not a great experience. We arrived at 6:45am for a 7:30 appointment. After waiting until 8:15am to even get in line for security, they told us we couldn't enter because we had a little fan for our daughter. We asked them to check our bags to see if there was anything else we should get rid of before trying to enter again and they told us if they check and find anything, we'll be denied entry for the day.
So, in an effort to not risk it, Horacio ran to the local mall, got a bag from Starbucks and stored all of our battery opperated items behind the trash can in the bathroom. The Starbucks wouldn't hold the bag. Thankfully, no one stole anything and we were able to get the bag after.
We finally got into the consulate and waited about 4 hours for a 10 minute appointment. The actual appointment was easy and quick since we had all of our documents in a binder, clearly labeled and organized. Miracle was tremendously helpful in helping us get all of this together. They gave clear instructions to us and went through everything we had on some video calls leading up to the appointment to confirm we were ready.
The diplomat at the Embassy even mentioned to us that Miracle Surrogacy was an agency they appreciate working with because they have their act together and everything is done well. We felt really comforted hearing this confirmed.
I definitely recommend printing everything you can at home and putting it in a binder with labels. It's one less thing to worry about when you're caring for a newborn baby. Any documents that Miracle needs to provide, they will give you and make sure you have copies.
Eventually, we got to leave and were told we could return at 3:00pm to get our daughter's passport and after that, we were cleared to come back to home!
We spent a few hours exploring Merida, which is beautiful, before getting the passport and leaving Merida. The drive back to Cancun took about 5.5 hours. Note: there is a 1 hour time change from Cancun to Merida. It messed with our little routine but we quickly recovered.
Consulate Recommendations:
-Keep a google drive folder with PDFs of everything you need (5 years of taxes, Medical checkups, birth cert, pictures of passports, Miracle invoices, initial contract and surrogate contract etc.)
- Print 2 copies of everything before you leave for Mexico
- Place in secure binder and label every page with post its
- Bring extra clear sheets for the papers Miracle will print for you
- Get to the consulate at least 15 minutes before your appointment but be prepared to wait possibly. Eat before. There is no adult food at all allowed.
- Do not bring any electronics accept for your phones. No portable chargers, fans, wires - nothing
- Bring extra food for baby and a blanket - it's cold in the consulate
- Look carefully at your consulate's website for what you can bring inside. For the US, it's ultimately at the descretion of the guard. We got lucky and they allowed us in with the stroller but they didn't have to.
Make sure you use the new address for the consulate in Merida. Triple confirm you have the right address - it's confusing!
Since we spent 4+ hours waiting in the consulate, we got good at bathroom diaper changes and feedings.
Finally, we got to celebrate knowing that we were cleared to fly home as a family!
We are so grateful both grandmas were able to come Cancun and be with us at different points of our stay. They helped us tremendously and we are lucky boys to have such amazing moms and grandmas to Lila. If you can bring your parents with you or have them come down to help, we highly encourage it!
We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors who have been cheering us on throughout this journey. So many people have reached out with help, guidance, and advice, and their support has meant the world to us. We highly recommend sharing your story—when you’re ready—with the people around you. Setting clear boundaries about which questions you’re comfortable answering and what information you’re willing to share made it much easier for us. And now, we get to celebrate the greatest gift of our lives with everyone!
Looking back on the entire process feels a bit surreal. How lucky are we to live in a time and place where something like this is even possible? Miracle Surrogacy has truly been a blessing. From the doctors they partner with—who took videos of the birth when I was too overwhelmed to reach for my phone—to people like Alex, who captured every special moment of our journey in Cancun, we felt genuinely cared for every step of the way.
One thing that mattered most to us was having a single point of contact throughout the process. In the U.S., you juggle a clinic, an agency, a hospital, a surrogate, and several lawyers. We were overwhelmed by the cost and the sheer number of people to keep track of. With Miracle, it was a true one-stop shop. We had one person, Kevin, guiding us until we arrived in Mexico, and even then—once we were in a group chat—our questions were always directed to the same friendly face (though the whole team was wonderfully supportive).
Would we do it all again? Absolutely. In fact, we’ve already begun our second journey and hope to pursue a third. At the end of the day, what matters most is that we were able to grow our family in a safe, ethical, and affordable way. We now have the most precious gift anyone could ever give us, and we are beyond grateful. Words can’t fully express how thankful we are to Miracle and their team for turning this dream into reality.
